Running Two Batteries

Recommended Posts

I am driving a classic car, and I have a 12 volt set up and everything and the car has an alternator on it and everything. I have one battery in the car right now, but I wanted to run wires to the trunk and have another battery in there as well. I dont want to hook anything up to this second battery (like and amp or any other electronics in the car) I just want it to be used as a back up battery for the one under the hood. Basically so if the one under the hood gets low on juice when I am bumping at night with my head lights on and everything my stuff wont shut off or drop volts. What is the best way to do this?!

In parallel.

Positive to positive. Negative to negative

you can start by using this forums search function... but seriously dude, put the battery in the trunk, ground it and run a + wire up from the battery up to the alternator... make sure you fuse the wire at both ends and maybe just leave one fuse out until battery 1 dies then put the fuse in to connect it... but, idk...

No need to run a switch, if you have two good batteries you could bump for HOURS and still start, I have done it with two batteries, head lights on for 3 hours, started right up.

Positive to Positive, then ground the the Chassis or run another ground wire.

So there is no need to run the NEG from the battery? I can just use the amp wire I have ran to the trunk from under the hood and I should be fine as long as I ground the trunk battery in the trunk and hook the POS wire from the hood battery to the POS on the trunk battery?

Also there is no need to add a battery isolator? And there shouldnt be any problems with my charging system?

it is better to run the negative from front to back batteries but grounding it in the back will work fine. what size is the + wire you already have?

the isolator only saves the front battery from draining while the car is off. its like an idiot switch. if your stupid and you run your battery dead all the time... you need the idiot switch lol.

If I answered you in a well mannered, informative way, you asked a good question or had a good attitude. If I was an asshole, you asked a stupid question or you had a fucktard attitude... or I was in a bad mood.

4 AWG wire is already ran to the back. I dont ever listen to anything or have anything running when the car is off so I dont run my battery dead intentionally. I just need extra juice for at night when I run the HID'S subs, stereo, dash lights stuff like that... It drops right now from 14.4 to less then 11v, I believe cause my front battery has a dead cell. Runs fine in the daytime though.

Replace the battery in question with the dead cell first and then move on to a h/o alt.
