What will yield the highest SPL?

Recommended Posts

For the purpose of this thread I am going to use RE's SEX Subs as an example.

Subs are rated for 600 watts RMS. So lets assume we are going to feed each sub 600 watts of power. Now if you look at the cone area of 4 15's versus 6 12's the 15 inch subs yield a little more surface area. However you will have 3600 watts RMS with 6 12's versus 2400 watts RMS with 4 15's. So assuming both enclosures are optimal for each sub combos and tuned for the same frequency which will peform better?

Thanks in Advance.

Warm Regards,

Dyno Brian

i honestly dont know for sure but i would guess the 12"s would be louder. it takes more power to move the larger cone so when you spread the weight of the cones across the drivers they should be more efficient.

crappy 1am description but you get the point.

If I answered you in a well mannered, informative way, you asked a good question or had a good attitude. If I was an asshole, you asked a stupid question or you had a fucktard attitude... or I was in a bad mood.

Lollie wollie :P

Don't think so, it shouldn't make any difference, it's just what you think is louder will be louder, it shouldn't really mather.

I would do the 4 15's since it's easier to wire up and easier to make a box fot hem. ;)

that doesnt make any sense?

The twelves would be louder, the little cone area gain with the 15's wont outweigh the fact the 12's have alot more power. As skittles said

Skittless explaination (sp?) makes sense.

But it's not true. ;)

Woops i mised the wattage part, the 12's should be louder in theory.(but the negative side of it you need 3 amps for a normal ohm load...) :peepwall:

EDIt: Ray, am i right? (about skittles theory.)

I would take power over cone area any day of the week for spl the end........

haha the team bassick motto "put a 12k on it and itll be loud"

i dont see how my theory could be wrong. if you have 4 guys carrying a 300lbs log, and another group of 6 guys carrying a 300lbs log, who will be able to carry it the longest? its the same concept.

Exactly

i was thinking leave the 12 sitting in the box in the hole and duck tape from the bottom of the sub to the bottom of the baffle so the sub doesnt free air. would that work?
