AUDIOADDICT02 Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 No what I'm sayin is most 3in coils will take more power than smaller coils. I get it now......thanks! Boon Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 So what's the difference between vc sizes? Usually with a 3" coil you get a bit more thermal power handling because the windings are spread over a larger surface area (assuming the same winding height) There are tradeoffs though. A 3" coil has a larger former obviously and is usually heavier than a smaller coil. This gives the sub a higher moving mass and lower Fs. A smaller coil will probably be more efficient due to weighing less, although to get the same power handling they will use a thicker gauge wire for the winding which lowers efficiency (less windings in the gap) It's swings and roundabouts. Bigger doesn't necassarily mean better. The Atomic AP12 runs a 2.5" coil and I've fed one of them the thick end of 4kw. Quote 10.x volts fo' life!
Noobtastic14 Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Also, Assuming the sundown 4 spoke basket has the same spider diameter you have to consider the different spiders. A 2.5" coil will have more spider than a 3" coil on the same basket. -Drew Quote I am a United States Military Arts and Crafts Professional.
