Center Console Build For My Acura Integra 1999

Recommended Posts

one thing ive noticed with groundpounder's bazillion fiberglassin jobs: it seems he just applys resin first after its wrapped with no glass. then he will glass it from the inside, then the ouside...this probably makes the final product a lot less easier to knock down and make smooth...

anyways...looks awesome for a beginner...i need to try my hand a bit more at it.

i likes me some audio stuff...

hey matt, thanks for the comment! im just making sure, but did you mean make it less easier to knock down and make smooth?

But yea, tommorow i am going to glass the inside and try to finish up the big 3 and install my new alternator. Im going to try cuz i really want it in, but i might end up needing a helping hand so it might not get done till the weekend. We'll see i guess.

ah, okay thanks matt, yea i wasnt sure because you also said final product so i thought you could have been talking about the end product as well, atleast by saying less easier to knock down i guess would be a great thing for the final product. Well, i am prepared to deal with whatever comes my way when i start to sand so we will see.

Hey matt, it was just a coincidence but...

last night i was reading a tutorial in the back of a CA&E magazine and they said to first resin the entire thing and let it completly dry for 6-8 hours. This helps so it doesnt warp.

Well i got worried that my center console wwould be warped because i didnt do it, i just straight fiberglassed. SO last night at 4 in the morning i go outside and put the thing in. It fits pretty good, any imperfections i can just use some body filler to do the job.

Here are some pics of it in that i took today.

As you can see the area where my custom center console meets the dash/center area is not completely flush, and i hope i can just fix that with some body filler.

so what i am thinking is just to tape off those edge areas of the dash, so i dont get any body filler on the dash part. Then ill put the center console in, like it is in the pictures. And i am just going to take some Rage gold and just fill in those gaps(the missing areas where it doesnt completly meet the dash.) What do you guys think about that plan?

I would use something other than rage.

Rage is really LIGHT and not really for structural buildiing but more for finishing work and just the "pretty outer layer/skin". If you have to "fill in" and have it decently strong/reinforced, I'd use either filler with Long strand (kitty hair like GP talks about) or straight body filler to make this junction you're talkin about.

Here's a "tip" (as if I know what I'm talkin about)

From My exp: Using body filler/bondo/rage, any time you put some down by itself it tends to look like frosting-all jagged and lots of high spots. Then it dries like that and theres more to sand down.

Well, In my exp, adding fiberglass resin to the mix makes it much more "LIQUIDY" (a word?) and it will need to be "painted on/into place", prolly in smaller quantities/more applications, and will DRIP off a bit if it's applied to the underside of something. However, as it's setting up, it will find it's own level (like a liquid) and the air bubbles will find their way to the surface so you'll have less air pockets/ holes when you sand it. I have read/heard that "body shop guys" do the same thing but they use something will evaporate like rubbing alcohol or something Inert/benign (sp?) like HONEY or other liquid.

When the mixure cures the liquid part either has evaporated away, or it's just mixed in but does not effect the integrity of the mix. I use Fglass resin in my body filler to do this and it werks fine-IF ANYTHING-it SPEEDS the drying time so get the stuff where you want it quicker and start mixin the 2nd batch asap.

BTW-It's just filler+resin+cream hardener-no need for the clear, resin hardener.

Hope that helps some.

Good luck man.
