ptcary Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Here is my first try at making my own a-pillar pods for a 5" Dayton mid and a 1" Peerless/Vifa tweeter. All in all not to bad of an experience so far. Some newbie advice for others. I added a block in the middle with 3 screws in it for added strength, instead of relying solely on the popcicle sticks. Also went ahead and cut out the plastic a-pillar like I had seen here on SMD to make more room for the magnet. And, an old t-shirt is best material to start out on, I bought some fleece at walmart, but it is more difficult to stretch due to it's thickness. I chose the height as it is close to ear level, and it kept the cutout for the magnet right in the middle of the rear structure of the plastic pillar, so it stays nice and strong. This is not an SQ setup by any means, so aiming them was a little less involved, and I really did not want them aimed directly at the listener. The center channel speakers really fill up the windshield with sound, too, so I should be ok with them aimed straight across with a very slight angle back at the listeners. All in all, this was not to bad, stretching and attaching the fabric with glue was the most time consuming, but again, my first time! I'll add these to my build log, but wanted to post here as all the previous posts about pillar pods are mostly from the pro's on here, and us newbies gotta post our experiences, too! Tomorrow, I'm gonna try the resin/bondo milkshake on them, then decide how to finish them off. PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG
LSN2meBoom916 Posted June 19, 2008 Report Posted June 19, 2008 Great lookin start man. I would advise using some actuall GLASS mat on them b4 the milkshake/filler. The stronger you make em and more "glass" (MAT) you use the less likely it is you will experience warpage or cracking from flexing once they're done. Just a thought. Loookin good tho thus far. ptcary Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 Thanks, I'll probably add some mat too, just don't want em to get too thick and require a lot more sanding. PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG

ptcary Posted June 20, 2008 Author Report Posted June 20, 2008 Did a layer of fiberglass cloth on them, tried the milkshake method (mix of resin and bondo), sprayed the inside with rubberized undercoat, then primered and test painted them. Not too bad for a newbie to fiberglass! They are not perfect when seen in person, but pretty good. PTCary 2003 SMD PT Cruiser 2011 Honda CBR 250R 2010 Mazda 3i Sport MY BUILD LOG
