Were old PPI flat piston subs just shallow mount or a different purpose?

I believe they were meant to be an Sq sub not sure if they were designed specifically as a shallow mount though.
Those are the subs Alma gates broke 170 with.

You are talking about late 90's.. Those weren't considered shallow at all.
