not sure how an alt fails to cause smoke but not continue once the car is off. if there was a short then turning the car off wouldnt do anything. all the power from the battery would be dumped out. unless there is a fuse that just took a while to pop. does the car still run? amps still work?

well i can show you some good mids for your price range but we come into a couple problems here. 1st is the crossover. you dont want the mids to get a full range signal. 2nd is you said you will add them to your 5ways? as in connect them to the same terminal on the amp? that is not a good idea. it'll change your ohm load and having different speakers on one channel is just bad in general. they speakers will fight eachother.

just mids? no tweeters?

there are good crossovers and shitty crossovers. caps glued to a speaker i would call a crap crossover.

"tweaking" is anything. i tweak with my box all the time and it can help or hurt. but it has nothing to do with braiding wires like a woman.

the tweeters popping is from them getting lower frequencies. so ya, you need a crossover. sometimes they will put a cap on the speaker as a crossover, not that i've ever trusted that to be a good crossover.

im not a computer guy but we use all intel in the product we make at work. must be a good product if we trust them in million dollar products. lol

lol yes its needed. maybe your hu is only .5v preout. you would need to turn the gain most of the way up. if its a 5v preout you might not turn it up much at all. and heres a kicker, if you have 8v preouts you might still clip with the gain all the way down.

so its not going into protect? easiest way to be 100% sure would be to swap out the amp. if everything works fine then its the amp.

i have heard about a cheap option. buy a pay as you go cell phone that can be tracked. put it on silent and hardwire the charger in the car. bam, gps tracking for your car.

i owned a refurb saz-1500 and my friend owns a refurb sae1200. both worked like new. they might even be more reliable. db-r says they do some mods to prevent common failures.

thanks for the info. but do you think a rockford 1500 could draw that much? and maybe its my meter that is crap? i had this amp in my dodge at 2ohm and it barely dimmed lights. would changing to 1ohm make that much of a difference? can be double the power from 2ohm to 1ohm so ya, big difference. test the stock meter. get yourself a DMM and check your voltage at the amp. see if its dropping as low as the stock meter says. you can get a DMM from home depot, radio shack, and lowes. they can be $10-200+

what is your voltage dropping to? what are the subs wired to? .5ohm, 1ohm, etc.
