Are you really trying to argue its ok to try different knobs in different amps, as you don't see anyway it can cause any harm? Quote

I'm just stating the fact that when bakerman tried a different knob, there could have been other things wrong with his system that caused smoke. Such as something loose in the amp itself that grounded out the knob. Like skittles said, you never know.
