Woofer is smelling and getting hot

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have a lvl 4 with 5 parts and im running a jbl GTO14001. Before this amp, which i bought yesterday, i had a kicker z1000.1 and for the longest time when i would play low bass it would start to smell and get hot. Now with this new amp, after playing a low-medium bass song for about 5 mins, my entire car smells very weird and ill put my hand to the cone and it is very hot, like to the point where i have to quit touching it. Can anyone help me with this? thanks.

Gains? Bass boost? What are the settings on the headunit. I'm seeing a clipped signal getting clipped, lol

Tell me...does this smell like chloroform to you?

Clipping the shit out of the amp most likely.

I would turn it down now before you see smoke.

Yeah I'd go with either a clipped signal or you need to tune your system properly. You could be getting issues with voltage drops, so get a voltmeter (I use stinger blue).

Definitely pay attention to the smell like Superjay said.

edit: umm make sure your ground connection is perfect. if you don't know what to look out for, do some searches on this forum

what are the settings like on your amplifier and headunit? example: where the gain is set on the amp, whether or not bass boost is used on your headunit, amp, ipod, etc., eq settings on headunit.

Hey, this sounds like me when I was young, dumb, and had a Visonik amp. Probably some glue melting and burning up on the sub from being clipped, like everyone else has mentioned. Get an o-scope. If you don't have one, lower the gains, bass boost, etc. I'm sure the smell will stop when you do so.

Aren't both amps stable at 2 ohms? I wonder what the wiring was set to. I wonder if too low and gain was increased to compensate, or if it was wired to 1 ohm and gain still turned up.

Also, information on enclosure?

Tell me...does this smell like chloroform to you?
