MrSkippyJ
I didn't realize we were supposed to ignore voltage when considering what wire to use. the voltage is irrelevant. 500watts into 1 ohm is 22amps. 2000watts into 4 ohm is 22amps. yeah you're right, voltage has no bearing on what a wire can handle... bignickk
the only problem in running 8 gauge is the subs terminals prob wont be big enough. my 15" hcca barley and i mean barley fits the crappy 8 gauge wire i got going to it. (im running parralel so the terminal with 2 wires is not big enough.) 2000 tahoe orion hcca 15.4 kicker zx2500 2 JL 300/4s infinity and kicker mids/highs KHC1400 in back, stock upfront dont ask about my HU clarion EQ kicker/fosgate rcas

MrSkippyJ
fuck me, wrong twice in one day. Yesterday must have been a bad day for me I am reading over what I wrote yesterday and I think I may have been confusing a couple posts or something. Plus I was playing black ops and doing this on my phone. I think I will not do that anymore. I failed this thread on basic damn electronics. Who knows what I was thinking here... TheyDontWantMusic
from what i see here you you are referring to power wire not speaker wire 2 different things no I'm talking about speaker cable. the wattage your amplifier is doing is one thing to consider when choosing speaker cable, but the impedance of your sub will determine how much amperage your cable needs to handle, which is how cable is measured. for example, if you had a monoblock amp, rated at 800watts into 1ohm, 500watts into 4ohm, and is a dual 2 ohm sub, you might figure that if you wire it at 4ohm, or 1ohm, it isn't much more power, so you don't need much bigger cable, when in fact. 500watts @ 4ohm is 11amps but 800watts @ 1ohm is 28amps so in fact, although you have 50% more power, you have nearly 3 times the current because of the lower impedance. you can run 10,000watts along 1amp cable, just it needs to be at 10,000volts http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-ohm.htm

JasonsKreationz
Well, I went with 10 gauge. That's what the shop told me to use. I'm running the JL Audio J2 1000.1 at 1 ohm on two 12" W3V3-2 subs. 05 Ram 1500 4x4 Hemi - 22x11 Fuel Hostage wrapped in 37" Nitto Mud Grappler - 3" Dual Flow Master w/ X pipe - 10" lift - Alpine 103BT Head unit - JL Audio J2-320.4 - JL Audio J2-1000.1 - (2) 12" JL Audio W3V3 - (2) sets of JL Audio components - 5% tint - 6000K HID - CAI - and more....
