donellk
What would be the best way to paint mdf? I was thinking coat it in resin sand it use body filler where needed then primer and paint! Is there a better cheaper way or would that be the best? Jbabycsx
Make sure you sand the bare MDF before putting anything on it. The glue and sealers they use in it will change how things adhere to it. Bakerman
Well, bare mdf will soak up the paint, alot...you could always do several layers of primer, then paint. But i believe by the time you spend money on the primer, it will be about the same to do it the right way with resin and body filler. Not to mention, you will be alot happier with those results. Torres
i was going to post that exact thread. on the last couple boxes i've done, i've covered em in fabric but in the port i just use a roller and roll the paint on. it's thick and doesn't get sucked into the wood. one coat, maybe two is all you need. but if you're gonna paint the outside of it, proper prep work will still be needed

xterraboy03
Well you have a couple of different options. You could sand it down smooth and spray primer but its going to take some cans of paint. If you have a spray gun you can lay some real coats of primer fairly fast with great coverage then paint the base with some clear on top. If your going the cheap route, I like to build box's, then sand them down use fiberglass body filler over the screw holes and then get some bed coating and roll it on. It ends up looking really good and if you fudge up a couple of spots it really wont be noticeable.
