Okay, now it's story time. I hated school, quit, but went back after meeting a girl. I liked her a lot and went back just to hang out with her. To make a long story short, we had my son while we were still in high school. (We are still happily married today.) with a kid on the way I had to start making a living. Everything I tried just didn't fit, I kept going back to car audio. Around 1996-97, I decided it was time to build a car that would showcase my skill. I went with an above-average install, but had a budget to work on. This was the first build I had taken seriously at the time. A customer had come by the shop I was working at and talked me into entering a car stereo competition...from that day on...I was hooked!

This was my 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera ( I apologize for the pic quality in advance)

The first thing to go in the car was the alarm system. I wanted something different, so it went behind plexi in the glove compartment. You can Also see the Image Dynamics 8" midbass in the kick.

Along with those 8", I also installed a pair of Image Dynamics Horns under the dash. This car sounded amazing! You can see the Pioneer Premier DEX-P1R sitting in the dash.

Texas state inspection says you have to have an Emergency brake in the car. The E-brake pedal had to be removed for the kick, so I re-routed the cable and installed a heavy duty actuator to keep it operational.

Three JLAudio 12w6 were put in the sparetire well in a sealed enclosure.

Two oldschool Earthquake amps were used to power the system. The UHC-2020 powered the subs, while a 4300T powered the front stage.

The amprack was motorized. it flipped up, under the read deck.

To the average person, there was not much to see on a daily basis.

I made some changes afte the first show I enetered. they will have to wait until tonite, vacations i sover, and it is time to go back to work!

One of the Sound Quality gretas (John Pitts) had judged my 1st show. The guy was extremely knowledgable and very helpful in pointing out stuff I needed to work on. The very next day, I was ripping stuff apart and redoing it to get the points that had cost me 1st place at my very first show.

I made a better mount for the Image horns and new kicks for the 8's that were a little smaller and wrapped in vinyl.

I added little windows in the floor to show the wire path of the Signal cables, Power wire, and Speaker wires.

This is the Power distribution/ Fuse center. It was light up in blue neon when the trunk was opened. When the amprack was opened, the neon would change to red.

Now for the best part...a new trunk.

This what people saw from day to day.

The middle panel was removable, to show off the company logos for product in the car. The top piece of acrylic was back lit with Blue neon.

When the motorized rack started to open all of the blue neon in the trunk would turn red. Notice the panel to teh right? magnetic switches were used to open and close the amprack. That is a Precision Power PC-2350 at the bottom of the pick (on the amprack door). It powered the JL subs. The smaller PPI PC-450 was for the mids and highs.

A friend in the graphics industry made this for me, it went in the presentation portfolio for the car.

We got a 1997 Chevy Cheyenne after our Oldsmobile was totalled.

I built a custom kit for the Eclipse CD player. I mounted the remote for the line driver in place of the pocket under the Ac controls

We went with Focal on this install. The custom kicks were built to look OEM when the grilles are in place. I rebuilt the bottom half of the door panel, making the grill removable allowing the 7" midbass to be seen.

Here is a shot with the grilles in place.

I took the power distribution and fuse blocks apart. I mounted it all to a custom piece that replaced one of the pockets in the rear of the truck.

Two batteries were mounted in a tool box in the bed.

I removed the covers on the line driver and the crossover. I made new covers out of plexi. They were mounted in a motorized panels behind the rear seat.

Three MA Audio 12's were installed in a ported enclosure under the rear seat. The seat was rebuilt, to allow for the room needed to fit the box underneath it.

I built a grille to hide the subs from prying eyes.

The covers to both MA Audio amps were removed and replaced by custom plexi covers. I added extra fans to ensure proper cooling. This photo also shows the plexi window in the top of the box.

We were in the middle of a rebuild when the truck was caught up in Tropical Storm Allison, which turned downtown Houston into a HUGE lake.

So with USACi World Finals two months away and a promise to some sponsors to be there, we had no choice but to literally throw an install together to meet that promise. After the 'great flood', decent trucks were nowhere to be found. All of the pieces we had ready to install were useless. We were pretty much stuck getting a car, so we picked up a 1997 Dodge Intrepid.

It was around this time that my wife and kids really got into the car audio thing. This was the first car they had actually helped me build.

The OEM air cleaner was removed so I could make room for a second battery under the hood.

The OEM windshield wash tank and factory battery mount were relocated to make room for a second alternator. There were two different charging systems in the car. Thats a high output Alt off of a Chevy truck!

Custom kick panels were built for some Image Dynamics 8"

The driver side held three, 3 Farad caps mounted behind the Fuse and power distribution blocks.

I had nothing to fill the passenger side wall with, so I stuck spare fuses and a fire extinguisher there

Three MA Audio 12's were put under the rear deck in a ported enclosure. The port fired out the "Ski Hole" in the back seat. The amps from the Chevy truck were mounted under smoked plexi in the spare tire well. There were 18 tubes of neon used in the trunk.

We managed to get the car finished 2 am Thursday morning. We immediately left for Kansas City. We had enough time to get a hotel and get in the building for the show by the deadline Saturday morning. I spent some time socalizing with friends the first day, showing the car to anyone interested. Sunday morning I was talking with a writer from one of the magazines. He was looking over the car, listening to my story, when he brought up all of the lighting. It hit me a few minutes later. When we were rushing through all of the last minute things I needed to do, I had wired the neon to the OEM charging system. The amps were powered by the Aux charging system. I did this to ensure that there would be plenty of power for the amps when the time came. But in the rush, I had connected the radio's power to the OEM system. With 18 tubes of neon running most of the day, the OEM system was surely taxed for juice...and it was. When it came time to get judged, there wasn't even enough power to make the face of the radio flip open! We went through all of that trouble, and got last place @ Finals! To add insult to injury, they allowed a well-known competitor two cars over start his truck so he could "Top off" his batteries!
