mken4392 Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 Today I was replacing the speakers in the back doors of my truck and was using a multimeter to double check the polarity. All other speakers were disconnected so i just cranked my head unit with out paying much attention and noticed the reading on the DMM was alternating between positive and negative. My head unit was turned to 33 and i know it clips around 28 with music. When I turned the deck down the reading on the DMM stayed positive but as soon as i turned it to 29 the reading would turn negative every 2 or 3 seconds. The higher I turned it past 29 the more frequently the reading went negative. Is this an indication of clipping? I don't have an oscope so I can't check for sure if this is a clipping indicator. If you guys know where your unit clips or you have an oscope could you check this out and see if a negative reading on your DMM means you're clipping? I'm really curious now

mken4392 Posted May 18, 2011 Author Report Posted May 18, 2011 Who knows this may even be how Steve's "distortion listener" works if it turns out negative DMM readings are an indication of clipping. I've been on the edge of my seat waiting for that to drop! I'll take the meter out to my truck tomorrow and hook it up to my sub outs and see exactly when it gives me the negatives when i run some test tones.
dereileak Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 Very Interesting, I don't see how this would work because when you clip the signal stays at a voltage through the clipped wave, but if it works in real world practice, this would be pretty damn cool, should try it with a bass CD and see if it changes things up a bit 2006 Mazda3 Hatchback Black 5 Spd ManualPioneer 4300DVD2 Sundown SA-12 (34hz Tune, 3.22 cubes, 14.5 inches per cube, Triple Baffle)Kicker 10ZX2500.1 (2845 RMS) Sub AmpKicker 11ZX650.4 (705 RMS) Mid Amp -- (3 Amps)Kicker KQ3 Active CrossoverKicker KQ30 EqualizerKicker 09QS60.2 Components (Woven Carbon Cones)Kicker 09QS65.2 Components (Woven Carbon Cones) - (3 Sets)2/0 Gauge Electron Beam Technologies (3 Runs, 2 +, 1 -) 1/0 Gauge KNU Kollasal Flex (1 Run for -) 300 Ft Kicker X-Series 16 Gauge Speaker WireXS Power D3400 (Rear)XS Power D3100 (Front)Singer Externally Regulated Alternator (Being Built)+ The Love for Car Audio and BASS <3UBL Build Log <------- Click Here-------> Normal Build Log (For Comments)

CJ18 Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 isn't clipping DC voltage? If your amp is putting out dc voltage you might have bigger problems than clipping
