SMD Distortion Detector Testing and Review!

Recommended Posts

nothing to do with the DD1 but if you are using the CD to set it and playing music with an Iphone or Itouch there will be distortion. I saw the guy with the crescendo and btls was playing with an Iphone. if you didnt do it, you should of set the gains with the Iphone playing tones. something about the Iphones, the just put out more signal, my car when Itouch > Zune > CD it terms of what was louder on the same deck volume

maybe ill put this to the test when mine comes in.

me too,

also what about a USB drive? i have alot of decaf on a usb that i use

yeah I think pretty much all ipods do that cuz my ipod at max volume hooked up to the head unit aux, makes the head unit distort at 30 out of 35, if I put a CD in it distorts at 34 out of 35, I know i still need to get it tested with the DD-1 though.

If you are using the 3.5mm headphone jack then no wonder its distorting. That is one of the worst ways you can transfer audio because the amp inside the iPod/iPhone will cause distortion way too early. The best way to get audio from an idevice is via USB through the 30 pin connector because it is a line-level output. If you have good quality music, it could actually be better fidelity than CD's (iTunes - 320kb/s CD's - 160kb/s)

thats incorrect information as CD's are alot more then 160kb

when you tested was bass boost all the way down on bass amps? and what about bass knob

shame shame shame...should be using a LC1

School me on why one use the LC1 over bass knob

most bass knobs are gain adjustments or bass enhancers.

an lc1 cuts signal through the rca so that you arent introducing anything to the mix. your taking away up to 1200 percent of the bass by turning the knob down. Of course you set the amp with that knob all the way up though.

I wasnt fond of the LC1. I found that even when i turned the knob all the way down it still let a fair amount of bass through. I use a BC-101 basically the same thing. It does have another knob tho, I have yet to completly figure out what exactly its supposed to do. its adjustable from 40-150Hz. But yeah when setting your amps, make sure the knob is all the way open that way you have more control over the amount of signal you let through.

This is an excellent point! Also something that I will include in the revised production owner's manual. If the customer's primary source is an iPhone, iPod, ect, the tracks from the CD should be ripped to the iPod at the highest bit rate possible, and then use that as the source for all testing. Also, very important, iTunes "Sound Check" HAS TO BE TURNED OFF during this process. If not the iTunes software will adjust the level of the tracks and mess you up.

This is very true. I say set your gains according to the way you listen to most music, for example if you listen to CDs more than anything else use a CD to set gains, If Ipod is your thing use that, USB...whatever it is use that source for best results.

Can't you use a 3.55mm jack to RCA wire? Then use the dd-1 with the RCA wire? On my alpine the volume is SO low wen I use the iPod wire as compared to my aux input so I never use it unless to charge my phone.

I have noticed using a CD and loading on an IPOD there is about a -12-15volt diffance in output when the ipod EQ is set off. Now on some setting I have seen as much as a -40volt diffance over the CD. I would advice in ripping the CD in the lossless format, but it takes up alot more room on the Harddrive

Thats how I use mine. Just plug her into the AUX on my HU. But my HU goes into the BC101 then to the amps. Well just my sub amp rca.
