Sound keeps cutting off...help me diagnose the problem!

Long story short, I bought a Memphis 16-MCD1500 from someone on here after my last amp went bad. I connected all of my wires and everything was fine for a few days til my sub stopped playing. I took a look at my amp and the light was on. Then I realized that there is some power going to the sub (I felt the sub and it was moving but definitely not enough to even realize it without touching it).

So I played with the settings on the amp and disconnected and reconnected my wires but still no luck. I finally gave up after that so after sitting around for just a minute or 2 trying to think about what else it could be, the sub all of a sudden started playing on its own.

Now a day later, the sub is back to cutting off and on. What could it possibly be?

My electrical hasn't been upgraded but I never had this much trouble with my last amp. I don't know much about systems but could my 100amp fuse be the problem? I was told that I should be using a 150amp fuse for this amp and for my wiring (4 gauge power and ground) but my fuse hasn't blown so I don't think that's it. One thing I did realize with this amp though is that my lights dim A LOT when playing at full power...wasn't as bad with my last amp. The second time that my sub cut off is when I had my music playing at around full power. Hasn't turned back on since then but I still do feel the sub moving a little bit.

I replaced the RCAs today thinking that was the problem because they did give me trouble before but still no luck.

I would double check your ground wire. make sure its a good connection, and make sure its nice and tight.. also you should always sand down the ground spot before you attach your wires so that way you get the best connection possible.

The ground hasn't moved since the day I installed this system 5 years ago. Still nice and tight. I'll try disconnecting and reconnecting it though to see if that does anything.

I bought new RCAs today thinking that was the problem but it didn't change anything. I'll probably have to check the wiring from the amp to the sub. Hard to believe that's the problem though if the sub randomly works sometimes.

5 years for a ground can cause some corrosion. You didn't ground to a seat belt buckle or anything did you? Smell the amp, if you can see a vent hole. If it smells burnt you might have something else going on. Go up front under the hood and double check your ground connection from the frame to the battery. (This should be the same size as the ground lead going into your amp, BTW.

If you have a MultimeterRead the voltage coming off the RCAs when your problem starts. Put it on a bass heavy song and turn it up.

What Brand 4 gauge are you using? and is it truly 4 gauge cable ? Are you running another amp with this? If so how big? Usually 4 gauge would be o.k but personally i like to use 0/1 for anything over 1k, you said your lights were dimming how does your electrical look? I never ran Memphis amps but heard they were power hungry amplifiers there are a lot of things to consider. Start as suggested earlier and grab a DMM check all connections for voltage and make sure all are solid if that checks out start trouble shooting, start at the batt. and work your way back. It sounds to me like you may have a loose connection inside the amp on the speaker outputs, don't think your fuse is the problem.

Change the fuse? I know for some reason after awhile my fuses seem to break. They don't blow or anything just break at the top or bottom where you cant see it
