Basically, is a 4th order bandpass more efficient than your every day ported enclosure? I ask because a friend of mine is wanting a system that is low cost and efficient when it comes to output. I suggested a single 10 in a 4th order bandpass and I will sell him my extra Orion 300d. He isn't wanting to have tons of bass, just something nice and keep it all pretty low key. So the question is, will he have better output with a 4th order over having a simple ported enclosure built? Oh and just as a note, this will be going in a 2002 grand price and the port will be situated in front of the pass-thru in the middle of the back seat.

so when tuning you need to tune for the kind of music youll listen to for the best result.

That will be difficult seeing as he listens to a wide variety, mostly rap, country, and house music though.

it's only as peaky (and efficient) as you design it.

As with any box type.

I've built many different types of boxes in the past, as well as designed many many more that were eventually built by others and i can tell you that while a 4th order is fun to play with, you'd be just as happy, if not happier with a good design ported to utilize the back wave of the drivers.

Like Sani said, if you're looking for a wide bandwidth, it's just as easy to get loud with a ported box in most cases. If you want specialized output within a smaller range, say a 20hz passband, then a 4th order BP will be a more viable option. In order to get a wide passband with the BP, 25hz-70hz passband, the efficiency is going to have to suffer in most cases.

do ported, easier and if you want it to play every kind of music a ported box will be more efficient and louder at low frequency and its easier to replace and moniter the subwoofer

I guess it's back to the drawing board to try and find a way to get a ported box in the trunk and do it more stealthy. I was planning on having a 4th order built with the port extending a bit to slide into the pass-thru in the back seats then put a cover board on the side of the box to hide it when you open the trunk. Basically he needs small, efficient, and mostly hidden. Anyone have any ideas for a small ported box that will achieve that? It's going in the trunk of a 2002 Grand Prix, I think I stated that in the first post.
