Elementary wiring question. Just want to make sure I have the right idea.

My buddy is getting his first system w/an Alpine H.U. with the harnass and all.

I'll be doing the install to a 1999 Monte Carlo. I have the wiring listing, but i'm a tad bit puzzled on one simple thing.

Does the "color/color" mean it's a striped line or a "color OR color" config?

Example.

Ground = Black/White.

Does that mean it's "Black or White", or "Bladck and White (Striped/etc)"?

Sorry for the confusion. I just want to make sure 'cause there's 3 "/" wires and I'm being overpercautious.

Ground.............Black/White

Illumination.......Gray/Black

Dimmer.............Brown/White

First color is solid color, second color is the color of the stripe.

The first color is the main wire color, the second color is the stripe color. On the same wire lol.

it means it is black AND white. For example the positive wire is solid yellow so you connect the all yellow wire together. Now for your rear channel, there is a green/black one. This means that one of the wires will be green AND black for that same channel.

If you passed first grade and know your colors and can match them up you will be fine. If a wire is almost green but has a small black line on it, match it with the other wire that is almost green but has a small black line on it. Its just color matching when you are using a wire harness adapter with the wires that come out the back of the radio.

I figured it was striped.

I can match colors, but that doesn't always mean that the stock stereo's harnass will match up to the ater-market's. Despite being legally blind, I can see colors. I should be fine, Just wanted to know that question.. Thanks guys!

yes, I've gotten into Car audio installation recently, so I'm still learning.

If it doesnt then just read what that wire is for. If you read very closely on the wires that come out of the back of the radio, they print on there with what the wires are for. They will indicate what speaker it is, what power wire it is, etc. You may need a buddy to help you read them if you cant read small stuff as the writing is often very small on the wires jacket but its there. It will say on there as well as the wire jacket on the wire harness itself so if the colors dont match you can do that to figure out what wire to put where.

Very true. I didn't know they printed on the wires, but that's probably due to not being able to see. You've been helpful.

not a problem bro, usually its just matching wires up to their corresponding colors on both harnesses. It seems wrong though that the ground is black/white. The ground is almost always solid black. You may want to grab a buddy who can read the small print on the wires (not trying to make fun of you at all) and have them help you make sure the wires match up. It is better to be over cautious than have something wire up wrong and catch fire.

Reading through this, and it sounds like you are going to cut the factory wiring harness (the one coming from the car). If this is the case, I highly advise against it. It is worth the 10-20 dollars it costs for an adapter. This way, if you ever want to go back to stock, say like to trade it in, it's waaaaayyyy easier. If i mis-read and you are getting an adapter, then carry on. You're doing it right lol.

Going to try and get an adapter first, but if I can't, I'll cut the factory harnass to where I can wire it back together.
