Bluliner Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 In audiophile terms; how does that amp sound? (don't give me that "a watt is a watt" crap) Is it clinical & grainy? Clean and bright? Warm & smooth? Dirty? Dirty...but a good dirty? I ask b/c you may want to look for synergy instead of the right 'brand'. A dry & clinical sounding amp, like an old PPI, sounded best with slightly boomy speakers that had a shimmer to the tweeter. Old Rockfords really liked edgy speakers which sounded bright and/or harsh to some people as the old Power Series BBQ grill amps were very warm sounding. And I always thought Zapcos made titanium tweeters sound awesome. A lot of the above can be corrected with processing. But if you don't have a fancy DSP and/or you're too scared from the horror stories of them crapping out and popping your tweets...and I don't blame you...then you may want to look for a sound to compliment the amp's sonic character and not the logo on the case.
