recon440 Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Hello, I'm having an issue with the amplifier (Alpine MRD-M605) that reads 0.4v less than true voltage. Measuring with a DMM: Car off at battery: 12.82V Car off at amplifier terminals: 12.79V ACC on at battery: 12.62V ACC on at amplifier terminals: 12.59V ACC on at amplifier readout: 12.2V Car on, hot at battery: 13.8V Car on, hot at amplifier terminals: 13.78V Car on, hot at amplifer readout: 13.4V The charging system is fine. Starts off at 14.3V volts and drops down to a steady 13.7-13.8V when the battery is topped up. The car is also running the big 3. I've looked at the amplifier itself and there is no calibration options for voltage reading. The ground itself has no issues as the amplifier is basically getting true battery voltage at the terminals (12.82 @ batt / 12.79 @ amplifier terminals). I thought maybe the amplifier is metering the voltage from the REM wire so I jumped the 12V+ to the REM terminal but no change. It is still reading 0.4 down from what the true battery voltage is. Any ideas on why the amplifier is doing this? The amplifier runs fine and has no issues. I'd appreciate any insight on this. Thank you.
HatersGonnaHate Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 What kind of car and how old is the battery? newls1 Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 well, the way I think of it is this: That is just a "pretty feature" and used as a selling point to make people think it adds functionality. Does that make sense? There *MIGhT* be a little "set pot" to adjust inside the amp, but you may void warranty if you open it, so a catch 22 there! ignore it, and if your really concerned about voltage, get a nice voltage gauge and set it somewhere visible. I do not recommend the stinger gauge, been thru 2 of them, and now this one is failing too. Dakota Digital makes a solid unit... might want to look into it. I love my staffie So anti FACEBOOK it isn't even funny
recon440 Posted September 22, 2011 Author Report Posted September 22, 2011 Thanks for the replies. Forgot the mention the other details. -The battery is an Optima Red Top 80D23L (800CCA) which is 6 months old. Holds a charge perfectly. 12.84V fresh from a drive and settles down to around 12.7V after 30 minutes. -The vehicle is a 1997 Toyota Chaser 1JZ-GTE (comes with a 100A alternator stock). I'm not too worried about the amplifier functionality as it appears to be OK. The amp is about 5 year old and I bought it used so I wouldn't mind cracking it open to see if there is a dash pot that can be played around with. From what I'm gathering from pictures on the internet other people seem to be getting accurate readings.
newls1 Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 dont stress over this, really is no big deal I love my staffie So anti FACEBOOK it isn't even funny
recon440 Posted September 22, 2011 Author Report Posted September 22, 2011 dont stress over this, really is no big deal I'll open it up anyway out of my own sheer curiosity. Whether it's "bells and whistles", I'm not so sure. Techically the voltage is not metered correctly but in all situations the amplifier is exactly 0.4V down from the DMM. So there is some truth to what it's saying, just with a -0.4V offset.
kingsuv Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 The digital readout is more for looks then anything else. I have seen some off more then your .4. I wouldn't sweat it. I doubt there is an adjustment pot in the amp, but you can look. Of course you might spend days trying to dial it exactly in just right Designing, building, and shipping boxes. Yahoo IM - kingsuv00If the listening level is too loud, please inform the driver, so he can promptly pull over, and let you out. not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it.
