A voice coil does not have to be discolored to be clipped, this is a myth! Its an aluminum wound coil, its hard for the coil color to alter. However on a copper wound coil, the copper very easily discolors, burns, and what not once the wire has reached its heat tolerance. Where as aluminum not so much since its more tolerable to heat, and in most cases why you notice people having burnt tinsels from severe clipping. There are some companies coils that are almost pure black and they are brand new. Robot Underground is usually good for this, As well as I done a few round wire AA Mayhem coils that where pretty damn dark too. Its all how the coil is made. Ive been told by a few companies that when you have chunks of wire missing out of your windings, its caused by clipping. Im well aware of your issue in your case, but that wouldnt cause a burnt chunk of aluminum out of your coil to the best of my knowledge. Here is one of my DD 9518 Aluminum flatwound 4layer 3inch coils, I clipped to hell to see how much it could handle before going to paper cones. Notice how it is also not discolored either, like I said, its very hard to discolor an aluminum voice coil! There a few scuffs and what not here and there, and also got board and unwound some of the top of the windings. This coil has been being tossed around in my garage for a good 2-3ish years now.
