What size alternator would I need?

Recommended Posts

I have a 1200 watt stero system, interior leds, halogens, and soon I will have exterior leds, HIDs, and a train horn on my truck. How many amps would I need at idle from an alternator to power all of this? I do have a XS d3400 under the hood, but my stock 136 amp alt isnt enough to power it all without my lights dimming and voltage droping.

Also does any one have any good brands they would recommend? I was looking into mike singer alts.

should be fine. re check all of your grounds man

It only goes down to about 12.4 volts when it drops, but with the stuff im planning to add you dont think I will need a bigger alt with more amps at idle? My alt now does 136 max amps.

You should be fine with a stock alt and a good battery with all 0 gauge and the big 3 maybe possibly get your alternator re wound.

spl dust is an option you can get on the coils... it's great for extra 1000 watts of power

where can i get this spl dust and how much is it. is it hard to apply? lol

I don't get why everyone is suggesting keeping the stock alt or modding the stock alt when the OP wants to upgrade the alt. The big 3 can only do so much, it doesn't make an alt 10x as powerful. /rant

A mechman, singer alt, or dc power alt would do your rig justice. Anything with 100+ amps at idle should be sufficient and leave you room to upgrade things in the future. Just make your purchase based on what you want to spend.
