so it works like a switch. If more current flows threw one place then it switches from the low current right?

ok think of it like this, you hook up some new head lights on your car, really bright and take up a lot of current. Ok soo you want to be abl to turn then on with a togle switch you mount on your dash, BUT the togle has really small wire connectors and is only rated for say 1 amp of current. Lets say your head lights need 20 amps. Your not gonna run the + from the battery, to the toggle then to the lights. Thats were the relay comes in. You take the large gauge + wire that you want to run to the lights from the power source, then to the relay "input" Then from the relay "output" to the lights. Then the relay also has a spot for a grround and a low current "trigger" from a + soruce, that is sent from the toggle switch.

Hope that cleared it up a little for ya. Basicaly its used like a switch for higher current aplications.
