ok so i've come across many videos and text of people using a multimeter to set the gain on their amps. My set up is as follows i have a Kicker 400.1 monoblock amplifier with a Kicker 10 inch CVT subwoofer rated at 400 watts rms and 800 peak. So i downloaded my 60hz test tone track and put it onto a flash drive, disconnected my sub from the amp, turned all the amp settings down but left the crossover frequency set at around 80, all the eqs on my HU are at 0, turned the multimeter to AC volts and put those in the amp output terminals + to + and - to - next i played the test track with the volume at 3/4 and slowly turned up the gain knob on the amplifier. The target voltage im looking for is 28.28 and this is where i ran into a problem. With the gain turned all the way up to max the reading was only giving me 26.6 volts. I did not have the vehicle engine running i only had the key turned so the accessories would come on. Would this be the problem would there be that much of a difference from the engine not running to it actually running? i am in no way a car audio pro just someone with a puzzling problem reaching out for advice to other people who probably know more about it then i do. Can anyone shed some light on this problem for me as its driving me crazy. I was told with the gain turned all the way up i should be seeing way more then 26.6 volts. is this true? Please help!!!

Don't set your gains with a dmm. DD-1 or an oscope are the only ways to properly do it.

I hate People with crappy primered cars rolling on hubcaps that are louder then me.

Turn the car on

Pull out the DMM and turn the amp gain up until the voltage stops climbing - then turn it down to a volt below that reading.

Or if you want to do it right, use a dd-1 or a oscilloscope
