Pioneer app radio questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have an 03 Tahoe with the Bose stereo in it. It's pretty much the wife's truck and she doesn't want anything crazy for audio but wants to upgrade the head unit. She saw pioneers app radio and pretty much decided on that for the head unit but I have some concerns.

First of all, I've heard that its not a great head unit. I know it only has 1 set of pre outs and they are 2 volts. But I only plan on running 1 amp eventually so I'm not too worried about that. But what else makes this deck so bad?

Second, I'm not sure how to integrate it with the stock Bose system. I haven't really looked into it yet but I've heard there are a few different adapters needed for an aftermarket head unit to work with the rest of the Bose system, but was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction with that.

The last thing is the sound quality. My wife is happy with the Bose sound quality but I'm worried that if I put in the app radio it wont sound as good. I plan on eventually getting good components for each door eventually and an amp to run them off of in the future but don't know when so the stock Bose speakers need to play nice with the app radio.

Thanks for any input!

I don't know much about the bose stock system integration so I will leave that for someone else.

From what I remember it jsut didn't work that well. Too many bugs and just not well designed from a functional standpoint. The lack of CD player is what ultimately drove me away from it however.

It's a neat idea and a nice looking radio but that's it. It's very slow at loading anything. Very basic settings. Preout RCA is only 1 set and low voltage which makes any half ass stereo hard to do. Wait year or so for them to release a new one. Honestly any decent pioneer double din is a lot nicer and has great iPod integration in their AVH line and are pretty affordable.

Why not just use an ipad? That's what the app radio is trying to copy anyways, right?

Yea I was thinking about using an iPad, but the wife doesn't want me to do anything custom work on the dash. So I was trying to find something that was double din size. But thanks for the input everyone! I may just try and talk her into a nice kenwood double din or something. Any suggestions?

Lol yea that's exactly why the wife doesn't want me to do anything custom. I'm sure I could do it cause I've molded stuff into dashes before but I'd rather not experiment with her car. Plus I'd still have to buy a deck that integrates with the iPad so for that I may as well buy a real nice double din and just use the iPhone.

Yeah unless you really want the app radio i'd either do a 3300 or a kenwood double din. As far as the bose factory amp you can either buy the plug that gmos-01 if i'm not mistaken or you can bypass the amp which will be the cheaper option.

Well the wife really liked it that's why I considered it. I just don't want to drop $400 bucks on getting it and installing it and the end result sounds like shit.
