I thought I would post up abit of a thread about my car named "the EX"

I have enjoyed listening to decent bass for a while but last year after winning my second novice sound off at a car show (where they meter show cars not sound off cars) I decided to take my car to a sound off comp and was lucky enough to get a few wins.

From there the bug bit as they say and I decided I wanted to get further into the world of bass and so purchased a car to do it.

This first pic is of my Ford Falcon that got me so deeply into this haha, I wont go much into details because thats not what this thread is for but it has metered 142.5db before, and during a sanctioned dB Drag event it hits 141.7dB Street Stock A legal.

Anyway after a couple of events I decided it I wanted to go bigger and after considering the build from scratch approach I realised that was going to take to long, I found a car interstate that had already had some work done but it was defected and the boys were looking to scrap the car if they could not sell it.

This helped us both out because I purchased the car as a base to work from and get into the game quicker mid season.

this is what the car looked like when I got it, it's a 93 Hyundai Excel x2.

She is looking a bit rough so we decided to give it a clean up and a cheap backyard paint job before starting on the install.

I had a LOT of metal flake just laying around so we decided to get heavy with it and used a 800g rainbow flake mixed with a 400g purple harliquin, it's not easy to see in this pic but if you think about the speedboats from the 80s or if you're in America I guess a lowrider that is the amount of flake we are talking lol

Anyway with that done we moved onto the install because there were a few comps coming up we wanted to attend, we were realistic in that this was our first attempt so we worked to a tight budget along with the short time frame.

We found two US Audio Bonecrusher2 amps and mounted them up along with an Axis 4ch amp and four pairs of cheap RF splits for the front doors.

Subs would come later because there was a comp I wanted to debute the car at, a bloke I had never met before and who lived over six hours away offered to bring over some subs for me to use because he was heading over anyway. No matter where car audio takes me I wont forget that offer from Steve aka Lunchbox because it just showed why he is considered one of the good guys in the Australian car audio scene (if you have not seen his youtube channel check it out, just search charade boom lunchbox and you will find his videos)

These old Beast Masters did their job and on 12v and a bit under 4000w we reached 150.3dB @ 34hz

Well after that we needed our own subs and after searching high and low we ended up going with the Vibe Audio 15" Space series subs rated at 1200rms.

With these subs we backed the power off a little more because the enclosure size was far to big for them (I will give full specs of everything later if people are interested)

Ok back again

After that est video we went to a couple of comps and abused the system on 12v for a while before we decided to go 16v

Not sure how many of you have owned an Excel x2 with a box in it thats about 25cf but lol it does not leave much room for batteries.

Having found some decent 8v batteries we got the tape measure out and soon worked out that we had to change somthing.

Seeing as the car was defected interstate so would not be a daily driver we cut the spare wheel well out of the back floor and after bracing it roughed in a battery tray aka plant trolly for Bunnings

At this stage it was getting close to the next comp so we dropped the batteries in after giving the tray a quick paint and wired it back up again.

Here is a short video from that comp where more then a couple of people commented how violent it looked in the car haha

A few weeks after that we attended the first even Bass Battle event to be held in our state and was lucky enough to win the pro ground pounder class and also score the highest score of the night then the following morning we went to the dB State title to win the SS 3-4 class (only entrant in class lol)

After that we decided the 13" stockies just were not cutting it so we found a set of 18s with near new tyres and fitted them (they are getting white and red walled next week.)

Over Christmas it was decided that the Vibe subs and the flat wall baffle would be removed with ideas of a 4th or 6th order and some subs that could handle the power we were able to provide them (about 10kw)

Long story short I got mucked around a bit on subs and by the time some were found and confirmed the funds had become an issue, the car club I'm a founding member of are organising a members car display plus a dB Drag event on the 26th so we decided that for now the flat baffle and Vibe's would go back in lol

Even though we are only retro fitting the baffle and subs for one maybe two comps there has been some changes made that should dramasiticly change what the car does but I wont disclose that untill after the 26th.

Here is a quick pic of the wood that will be used for the new design, it's two sheets of 25mm mdf bonded together then finished on both sides with a 1mm layer of Jarrah.

There will be more current updates and better pics after the 26th.

Felt kind of sorry for people standing at the back of the car not getting any music when they were looking in the hatch, I ordered some speakers just for these people and the speakers arrived today

70oz double stacked magnets with 2" voice coils and by all accounts they love playing down around 30-40hz, not bad for a 6x9 speaker haha

anyway I'm heading out the door right now to go pick up the amp I will be using to run these bad boys

as you know i was only too happy to bring over the gear, it needed to come out of the car anyways, and this way i could do something nice as well!! as you know i'm always happy to help out anywhere i can...
