In a slot ported box with 3 common walls that is 28 inches long. Does it mean that the piece of wood I cut would be 28 inches long or that the port is 28 inches down the middle?

Another way to calculate the port parts lengths is reading the Torres "Physical Port Length" box, the length of the parts will be:

L1 = Internal box depth - port width

L2 = Physical Port Length - 0.75 - L1

yep, it's measured down the middle. that's your effective port length. the physical port length is the length of the wood itself to attain that effective port length. i also stress working it out in sketchup as there's several ways to assemble a box and port. do what works best for you
