Stuff needed for becoming a DJ.

Recommended Posts

Budget is $25,000. He already has it saved up and everything. Thanks audio, damn fine advice.

Although you advise against a laptop, we're both for it. But, I'll bring up your point to my friend.

25000!! its going to take a while to recover that much

Not really. If we can get about 5 gigs a day. it'll be paid off within a year or two.

Just be ready for people looking at you as not a professional, and possibly bad reviews. :D

I'm not the DJ; One of my friends who is studying music is. He's very good IMO. We will look professional, No glasses, if you wear glasses, you gotta get contacts, no baggy clothes, must wear plain nice clothes (Black pants, white shirt, you get the drift), No beards, must have a clean cut...

Yeah that's what I told my friend, but if he thinks he can pull it off, I guess I'm on the boat with him. I only invested $3,000 in this so I'm not that worried about it. We'll get out. He's one of those "people" person.. Pretty much everyone knows him around my area, I'm sure he won't have a hard time getting the news out. We have a lot of other ways to get out, which I will not release.

Well, when i dj, i prefer an oldschool look and feel. If your going ALL digital, The Pioneer CDJ's are the way to go. If not, Then DEFINETLY the Technics SLZ. As for a mixer, Either the Pioneer DJM series, or a RANE mixer. The mixer varies greatly on which DJ software you choose. From a PA Speaker standpoint, I prefer the Mackies. VERY crisp highs. And if you buy the ones that are powered, You dont have to worry about spending all the money on amps. But in the case that you do have to buy concert stacks or amps, I would recommend QSC amps, and Electrovoice Speakers. And if you pair that up with An Electrovoice DC-One Processor, the setup will be concrete. If you need a sampler, the Native Instruments Maschine is a BADASS sampler. Keep your mind open to all suggestions, as this is my personal opinion. There are endless options in the DJ World. This equipment is what I prefer because I have used it.

Bose = Buy other sound equipment.

i love the rattle it's the best part! i need louder cheap amp any ideas?

I use a macbook pro $1600 +- with Virtual DJ Pro running a Hercules Rmx Controller $300+-. Have had no problems with it.

I was on a limited budget and wanted to spin various artists along with my original music, and could not afford cdjs or vinyl turntables.

I spin house, trance, electro, and some dubstep. You can visit my page -

As far as cdjs vs. vinyl vs. laptop with controllers go? It all comes down to what you have already, if you have a bunch of bought cds then cdjs (Pioneer cdj-1000) would be best, if you have alot of vinyl, then turntables (technics 1200 direct drive) would be your best bet. But if you are just getting into it, then a nice laptop with an external harddrive, and a dj controller like Allen & Heath, Numark NS Series, Hercules Series would do. As far as software goes - Virtual DJ, Traktor, and Serato.

I've seen djs that vinyl using Serato to control mp3 with vinyl, and cd djs control mp3 with cds. They switch to a more convenient setup of having mp3s on laptop and controlling them by either controller, cdj or vinyl. So they wouldn't have to carry so many cds or precious vinyl.

Sound? Well, your on a car audio forum and you could build your own - like Steve did

But some that I like are:

QSC, EV (Electro-Voice), Funktion-One, Void Acoustics, etc.

Mixers? That's up to you, if you are djing parties and not providing sound for a live band, then most dj mixers (2 to 6 channel) have a mic input or two.

Lights? Some can be bought in packages or separates, note that LED Light panels and strips can change colors and can play an image or video.

And if money wasn't an issue - xl video (think deadmau5 visuals)

I am liking all this information.

Thank you quake and nascar.

My job is to do research, buy the equipment, get it all set and tuned, and sit at the table in case if anything happens.

So your buddy just gave you the checkbook to a bank account with 25k in it and told you to go to town?

Damn.

The money is in my bank account. We've been friends for 9 years. We completely trust each other.
