you were able to turn it up 3/4 of the way becaues your preout voltage was ass. I dont know who started this misconception that sub level is supposed to be on 0 or 5 or whatever but im guessing they never checked the actual output voltage. Turn your sub out to 15. Im guessing you have an alpine. I'll bet that gets the full voltage out of it and then you can retune your amps. Id rahter my amps didnt have to work quite so hard to perform.

The head unit is kenwood & it has 4v preouts. I said the gain made it 3/4 before clipping. NOT that I was running it at 3/4. It's plenty powerful right below 1/2. & I'll test with the sub level at full but I know for a fact that will clip the signal from the HU

something seems off

I bring my hu to its highest unclipped signal (4v pre outs) and I don't even get a 1/4 turn on the gain to reach full power unclipped

i didnt think sub output level could cause clipping?...i am confused or misinformed here?..i know HU volume can but didnt think sub out had anything to do with the HU causing clipping...

same here.

OP, i would turn the sub level to 0, bass boost to 0, and make sure the HU Eq settings are at 0 as well.

you can set the sub level on the HU to whatever you want, but once you scope the pre-outs for the sub, 50hz or lower tone being used, you will find that you cannot turn the volume knob as high, and will cause clipping earlier.

General you want to set all eq settings to 0, and sub level to 0 when finding what your Hu will clip at xx volume.
