I have a small setup with now and im doing a huge upgrade and going to my first spl comp in a month or so. It is a weighted meter that has a poor quality mic that is very inaccurate. It can read 6-26dB off from a Term Lab. That basically means that it is more sensitive at certain frequencies than others. So you cannot tell SPL just by your ears. And every individual is different. What may seem louder to you, may seem less loud to a friend. You can test at the show, change one thing at a time. For example. Go up to the lanes, test with one song, record your SPL Then test with another song and record your SPL. Then using the loudest song change one thing, for instance moving your box position. Then record SPL. Keep doing this for as long as they let you test and only change 1 thing at a time, and keep a notepad with you. You can play tones depending on your class and what organization. Just ask the judge to help you find your frequency. You can then play a sweet from 20-80hz. Ask the judge where it peaked at and then the next round go and play just that frequency and the 2 above it.
