Shopping for my first car - Need input

Recommended Posts

I like my Volvo S70, has 212k, and still drives good, and very reliable.

Though I do sometimes wish I had the V70, but with 1st cars, you don't really get much of a choice.

Good luck on finding a good one.

Hey guys, I'm in the market for my first car and need some suggestions. Budget is ~5k, can go a bit over if needed.

I am looking for a medium-large car - I don't care if it's a sedan or coupe. I am open to hatchbacks too. Needs to seat 4, and I don't care if it's manual or automatic.

Priorities (in order)

  1. Safety - airbags, ABS, crash test ratings, etc
  2. Reliability
  3. Fuel economy / cheap to maintain
  4. Insurance cost
  5. RWD/AWD (I can't stand FWD)
  6. I do all my own work - so something semi-easy to maintain

What I have been considering:

Volvo V70 w/ turbo - Would like input specifically for this since this is at the 'top of the list' right now

Subaru outback

Mercedes e320

VW Jetta

I am open to feedback on my current list/additions to it.

Thanks! :)

Well off of your options that you gave I would go with the Subaru.. The other cars are expensive to maintain and repair. Not only that a pain in the ass to work on. My personal preference would be a Honda or Toyota. Both are reliable and low cost on maintenance.

Thats cool. Im way too old to be upset by shit like that. Your name is winston. Your own parents hated you even before you were born.

My penis is bigger than your penis

I'm far from loud and my roof/headliner flaps around like Adam's ass on a windy day. I think it depends more on the structure of the vehicle.

I say volvo wagon, but the v70 is front wheel drive so you would have to find an awd version. Although, fwd chassis are much harder to maintain for suspension, and steering components. Really, a wagon of some kind would be the best. Way easier to get louder, better visibility, stronger frame, better looking, and more social than sedans or coupes.

One of the things I am trying to factor into the budget is a complete flush/change of all fluids.

Let me know if I am missing anything in this list

  • Engine Oil
  • Transmission Fluid
  • Differential Fluid
  • Brake Fluid
  • Coolant
  • Wiper fluid (only if it's filled with water)

What I personally want is a Kia Optima SX. I think it's a good car and really haven't seen any bad reviews on it. Plus it has a very good safety rating.
