Ported Box SQ tuning

Recommended Posts

does box size effect the 60-80hz range in a ported box? I had 2 kenwood w3013ps subs, in a 1.61 per chamber cu.ft. box tuned at 34hz, hit 60-80 no problem but had weak lows, built a box 2 cu.ft per chamber tuned at 30hz, lost any bass above 60hz, but really banged the lows. wasn't sure if it was my small port area or the increase in box size that trashed the midbass in that box, the ports were only 3" pvc pipes so i think they might have choked the subs a bit

what i might do is throw some midbass drivers on the rear deck of my car in a thin box and build a 30hz tuned slightly oversized box again to get the lows nicely, but i'm really worried about the transition from the low bass in the subs, to the midbass in the other drivers (I listen to a lot of music w/ bass @ 34-40 transitioning to 80hz+)

perhaps you can see my dilemma here..

how much room do you have, a proper 4th order will do what you want i think. But you need to have the room, and i don't have much experience with 4th orders personally, but what ive heard, if done right, a 4th order will hit it all (if you got the right design and driver). I have my subs in a 3.8cube box at 34Hz, they hit low, play loud (sometimes loud to the ears isn't loud to the meter remember), get nice and up there, and my front stage is actively crossed at the HU. My subs play up to 80Hz then have a really steep filter. And my mids in my doors play down to 80Hz with i wanna say a 12 dB/oct, yes, there is a noticeable difference when it goes from my subs to my mids, but its tolerable. It sounds good still, i can say that much. But a sealed box will play flattest (most of the time) and take up the least space, and if you're going for SQ, you need to make sure you have enough for you mids/highs to match the lows. Or cut back on the lows so it blends well with the mids and highs. I prefer SQL to SQ personally.

I love my music loud and clear, that's why I'm trying to work my way with a ported box. I'm just running 2 4x6 2 ways, and 2 6x9 5 ways atm but I have upgrade plans in the future to some RF component systems ( can't do everything at once and break the bank )

I've never even seen a 4th order box but I'll do some research if it'll do what you say it does, sounds like it might require some skill to build though, I'll probably need some practice and learning time and end up just building a ported box until I could hack my way into 4th order boxes. thanks for the suggestion

just done the maths on you box, and to go ported youll need some more space

sealed is no problems as you only need 2.7 net

if your thinking about 4th youll need to double the size of you box

i have 17" H x 40" W, 48" D trunk space inbetween wheel wells, what dimensions were u coming up with for a low tuned box? and/or 4th order?

You'll never get bass as tight as a sealed box out of a ported box. The frequency roll-off is far more predictable and natural across a much broader range of frequencies when running sealed. Your best bet would be a low tuned bandpass box.

I'm gonna hate

You might be a Redneck if you use your leftover gutters for a speaker box port...

Mine is at 22 htz ... Love it !!!

happy for ya, how's it do on the mid bass 60-80?

Not sure ... My subs play 60 htz and below ... 50 htz and below for SQ judging ...

My midbass drivers take care of all that action ... daily ...

Alright I'll just have to throw in some midbass drivers since I plan on getting some anyway, and tune low. thanks!

Yes I knew this ^ , I was just wondering if It would give me a flatter response if I tuned lower, like 22hz as cablguy did..

what mid bass drivers are you running, and what are you pushing them with, and what freq range do they cover? I may go look up your build log.

@siucsaluki11 - I didn't read your post.

Again, having a flat response is meaningless if it comes with a sloppy roll-off slope.

I'm gonna hate
