tips for painting the car

I currently have yellow bumpers on my black mustang (as seen in my avatar). Some think it's a paint scheme, well it's buying GT bumpers from a yellow stang and puttin em on my black one xD. I've never painted a car before and wanted to know tips and tricks to doing it so i can finally black out my entire car again.

Sand down the entire bumper with 500 grit, put 3 coats of primer (let flash 10 min between coats) over entire bumpers, let sit 2-3 hours in sun, wet sand with 600, clean thoroughly with wax and grease remover. Now you are ready for paint! Spray medium coat first then, 2 More coats until completely covered with black base coat( let flash 10 min between coats), wait about 20 min then spray a light/medium coat of clear, wait 10 min the spray a medium heavy coat, wait 10 min, then spray final medium heavy coat of clear! The whole process should take a day, you can install bumpers after letting paint cure overnight!

im a firm believe in taking it to someone. This and window tint. to get he bumpers and skirts done cant be too much.

Gotta ask how new the black paint is on it? Reason being cuz if its starting to fade, or older than a few years, the bumpers won't match the car. Its difficult to match paint thats old with new. sometimes its better to blend into the other panels with the clearcoat, but its gonna cost way more, even doing it yourself. Really just depends on how close of a match you want. Audio concepts has it pretty much spot on if you didnt want to blend.

That's really detailed, thanks man, I'm gonna have to try it....but what's wet sanding?

Places around me are bull shit, it was a quote of $600 just to get the bumpers painted.

I have nooo idea, know nothing about blending and the black paint on it was re-done i believe right before i bought the car, i know the previous owner did it himself at least.

I'd rather invest that kind of money somewhere else in the car since I'm getting the whole thing repainted when i get back from basic

$600 is actually pretty reasonable. My biggest suggestion honestly would be if you aren't familiar with the process, aren't familiar with wetsanding and all that.....just suck it up and pay someone reputable. It is pretty easy to burn through clear and have start all over when color sanding, and buffing if you don't know what you are doing.

well considering when I worked at a shop we would charge any were from 3500-5000 on a complete basic paint job 600 is fair price

If you are getting the whole car repainted then why not just wait until then? Don't bother with the materials and time if it is just going to all be redone anyways.
