New ASUS router...... Working fine so far...

Recommended Posts

All,

We have mid tier Comcast interwebs. It consists of the router and modem that I "rent" from them of course.

(We have 3 laptops-wifi, 3 Ps3's-Ethernet cable. 2 mobile, 2 tablets-all wifi. Small house, dont need to reach 4 blocks. If that helps with suggestions?!? )

I was wondering if a better option would be to buy my own?!????.

Would I see a speed increase? Is it worth it? If so, what models?

I've heard or seen a modem/router all in one unit, is this the way to go?

Basically, break down, or toss some pros and cons, advice, options, opinions please. Laura is pretty good with the puter stuff, but not with hardware stuff.

Many thanks for any and all help ....

Kyle

Modem/Router in one unit I dont like because if one dies, both need to be replaced.

As far as the modem, I believe comcast supports DOCSIS 3.0, Motorola makes some really good ones.

Router wise, I usually try to stick with linksys, they seem to be the most bomb proof.

one of the few things i agree with beaker on but i agree with the modem/router all in one is a bad idea for that exact reason he posted.

i had our 2wire modem/router go down and at&t are not quick to replace that sort of thing.

basically linksys or cisco (higher tiered products only) will provide you with good stuff.

since you already have a modem and its working fine, i would suggest a router only. disable the wifi on your modem and run a ethernet cable to your new router (when you get one)

configure the router and hide the SSID and of course password protection is a must!

as for the whole small house, doesnt need to be 4 blocks type deal, just get a beefy 5ghz wireless N dual band router and HIDE the SSID. again, passwords are a must.

hiding the ssid will hide the router and your internet from anyone thats searching. in windows 7 it will appear as "unknown network" i believe.. or "unnamed network"

dual band wireless n (5GHz) is the best speed you can get from wireless.

this would ONLY speed up the networking INSIDE THE HOUSE.

this will however offer better connectivity to your wireless devices due to the antennas on the dual band router.

to break this down, i would suggest disabling the wireless on your modem that comcast gave you, run a ethernet cable to your new router (once you get one) and configure it from there.

it would offer you better connectivity if your having connection issues, such as 1 bar here, 3 bars there.. etc.

any device that runs a/b/g wireless is capped at 54mbp/s so anything thats at 49% connection will hurt internet speeds. (in my personal opinion, i know my ipad doesnt like 1 bar on wireless g)

I have a 2wire setup and from what I read its difficult at best to get the ATT router/modem to send signal to my dual band router and use my expensive router with network attached devices..

Dual band is cool, if you have devices that can use it. most of my devices cannot, so I dont use it too much. but network attached printing and / or just plugging a hardrive and having NAS is very very nice.

newegg.com has a modem i forget what it was called that a friend of mine used with comcast. He said that the speeds were a bit better, but you have to tweak it and test etc play with the MTU size etc.

So id say unless your going for the highest speeds etc possible for w/e reason.. if it aint broke dont fix it. from a $ stand point they charge you idk.. $7/mo rental, at at least 100 bux for a modem & router yyoure looking at 14 mo at least to get your money back. iirc its 7/mo anyway. So from that standpoint id just leave it also.

not really recommended to mess around with the MTU size due to it causes packet loss.

they generally are auto configured anyways.

and yeah dual band is amazing if you have devices that work with wireless N.

depending on how new their laptops are, the laptops will work with wireless N, the smart phones, and the tablets SHOULD.

so thats why i suggested dual band because they will actually use it and the extra bandwidth for connectivity.

Dual band???..

All I use mostly is 2 Ps3's Internet gaming, all ps3's are WIRED directly to the router.... Want the best I can get with what I have.

Then the use of our phones and laptops. Which are wireless.... Gotta make my bets, and look at my porn, while sitting on the toilet. You know how it is.

Fixing to go to lunch ...

This is when I'm lookin to purchase.

Thank you ALL for the help...

Are you going to flash it with a different firmware (dd-wrt, tomato, etc.) or just keep the official firmware? Some routers aren't compatible with those. I learned my lesson with my Netgear N600 v2 (I don't remember the model number, but the v1 is compatible)
