common port walls

Probably a dumb question but here goes, I know the difference between 1, 2, 3 and none my question is how does it affect tuning. I was using the torres calc. and would get optimum tuning and net volume and then when I put 3 in common walls it changes tuning quite a bit. Even did width of port by 3/4 for plywood by length to figure out displacement of wood and .14 for the level 2 12 and can't get the numbers to jive. Still going to build it per cut sheet just wondering.

the port for a 3 common wall will displace less air in a box than a 2 common wall and 2 common wall will displace less than a 0 common wall.

look at the 3 common wall box, it uses only one wall or board, where a 2 common wall box uses 2 pieces and 1 common wall uses 3 pieces, 0 uses 4 pieces. So typically if you are a tight space requirement you uses as little wood as possible to make the port.

when you change tat field in torres it changes your port displacement, and your net volume and your port ratio and your tuning. like a domino effect.

i think i figured it out on my own. 3 common uses the side which cut down on displacement for plywood. if you have a four sided port in the box you have to account for that displacement which changes the net volume thus changing the tuning, i think

3 means the port is touching 3 walls.

2 means the port is touching 2 walls.

1 means the port is touching 1 wall.

0 means the port is touching no walls.

Okay.... possible diagram? Or example of a 3 and 2? Please...

Thank Joe. I know you know boxes. Glad you chimed in.
