the_garynator Posted November 20, 2012 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2012 nicee bro.. now when will the 240sx get some work done hahaha lol, the white 240 will have some work done as soon as my friend who rents a portion of my shop purchases a welder...we'll start hammering out the seam welding at that point. Then when tax time comes around I'll be purchasing a bunch more goodies for it, unfortunately it's not going to be the big ticket goodies, but it will be a lot of the misc. stuff that I still need to finish the car lol. and this is a 240sx too! lol...so technically I am working on the 240sx, at least this 240sx lol Current Build: Project Flexington: 157.6db @ 37hz Parallel 6th order walk through, DC Neo Elite 18s, 4 DC 5.0ks, JY Lithium, 12 banks of XS Caps Old Builds:150db and HAIRTRICKs from 2x 12" Power Acoustik Mofos (6th order blow through) ;
Roadmaster Wagon Build - DC LVL 6 M3, Kicker Warhorse ; Godzilla swapped 240sx ; 6th Order Bandpass Alpine Type R 12 ; Fully loaded DC Level 5 18" 240sx Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
the_garynator Posted November 20, 2012 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2012 what cone is that on the left dc. never seen it before Custom lol...Not technically sure, but it's a TFS dustcap (full inverted dish) with a black DC decal, you can order them as an option from DC Audio (not sure if it's a standard option though...i did a bunch of research before I ordered it from Rusty.) I got the same dustcap with my 18" recone, but since I ordered the upgraded AR18 cone/surround, it didn't fit, so I had to cut it down to fit. This time though, I'm going with a custom decal. It's going to be a metalic blue enlarged DC logo, it will look similar to Thorshammer's old 10" Level 5s except scaled up to an 18". Just need to stop being lazy and source a custom decal lol. I have this one, which is my winter beater...it's stock except for the stereo system, but it's rusted out terribly, hence why I don't feel bad driving it during the winter. And regarding the holy negative camber thing, that valve cover is off of my friend's old turbo single cam S14 drift car, he qualified for a Formula D license but got bored and sold the car and is currently building a SICK Datsun 510. I have the ChukiMonster (autox toy and summer daily driver): Stock for the most part, just intake, full exhaust, lightened flywheel, etc. A lot of suspension work though...this is a bit of an older picture, since then I've upgraded the power brace (black things that the red rods connect to) and sway bars. Having a little fun...video of this is on youtube if anyone's interested And I have my white coupe from this thread: http://www.stevemead...y-hobbyproject/ : Current Build: Project Flexington: 157.6db @ 37hz Parallel 6th order walk through, DC Neo Elite 18s, 4 DC 5.0ks, JY Lithium, 12 banks of XS Caps Old Builds:150db and HAIRTRICKs from 2x 12" Power Acoustik Mofos (6th order blow through) ;
Roadmaster Wagon Build - DC LVL 6 M3, Kicker Warhorse ; Godzilla swapped 240sx ; 6th Order Bandpass Alpine Type R 12 ; Fully loaded DC Level 5 18" 240sx Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

the_garynator Posted November 20, 2012 Author Report Share Posted November 20, 2012 Found the picture of the trophies, was kinda cool, the sound competition trophies were old rockford mids with the cone replaced by a piece of plastic board: Also, prior to the sound competition we managed to hit a 151.0db (door open at the dash, car running) at 43hz, it was the highest I hit with this setup and only happened once (and I remember deciding not to take a picture that run cuz I figured we'd gain more later lol). it usually would do between a 150.2 and a 150.8. Anyway, back to the rest of the pictures. another picture of the brothers: Picked up a router and did a 1/2" roundover around the whole box: Also DA sanded the baffle down to wood and resin'd it (it was still the poly urethane up until this point) Put another coat of resin on the box too installed the new/used sub and holy crap did those two dead coils on the other one make a big difference. Turns out the half dead one was only moving about 1/2 or less compared to this one. Made a huge difference, especially in low end. One issue arose though, if I cranked it, it would short the amp out. The leads were ripped out of the spider (they were like that when I bought it). I ended up covering them in liquid electrical tape and that seemed to work. A couple weeks after we put it in, we metered it, it did a 150.0 at 36hz wired to 2ohm vs the old sub at 1ohm, but it also burped a 150.0 at 43hz too, but mid-way through the burp it cut out. When we pulled the sub, we found that one of the tinsel leads had broken. After further inspection I realized that the leads were between 1/2 and 2/3rds of the length they were supposed to be. This caused them to break when the sub was pushed hard so I had to keep the gain to 1/3rd of what it could do unclipped. The suspension was extremely soft when I got it, so the previous owner must have done some bad things to it: I got it in my head that I wanted it back in, I couldn't go back to the other half dead one after I realized what I was missing, so I gave it a shot. It actually held together for about 3 weeks when the solder joint broke again. While the sub was down for the, I took the time to do some more on the box...bondo'd and smoothed out the inner edges...a lot of this was done earlier, but just didn't have any pictures of it. Used a combination of bondo, short strand fiberglass and fiberglass resin. It was a TON of work. Learned a lot though and found a lot of tricks to cut down time. I fixed it again about 2 weeks ago, except did a better job and it survived for a week or so until I swapped the sub and box out for my freshly reconed level 5. Shortly before I pulled it out, we were doing some testing and with the gain at 1/3rd and the batteries half dead, we hit a 150.4db at 36hz... door open, at the dash, car on. The big difference is that we found that the tail lights were leaking bad so we sealed them up. I was going to retest before I pulled it out but my eeepc took a crap on me and didn't have time to get it back up and running before I pulled the 15 out to put the 18 in. but I suspect that she probably would have been able to hit a 151+, possibly at 36hz even. Shit was brutal. Now we're almost caught up...I've got to get my recent pictures uploaded to photobucket tonight. One last post and we'll be caught up to present day.
