Honda ELD Question- Dual Alts

Recommended Posts

My Buddy is running dual alts on his 95 Civic, walled with 2 15's.

He has 2 130 Amp eBay High amp alt's for now. I was wondering, I know the ELD makes the alts switch between modes... But which mode is the alt standing at?

I hope this makes sense, and here is why i am wondering...

On his second alt, he just has it wired up directly to the charging system, bypassing the ELD. Does this mean this whole time his 2nd alt has been in LO (Low-Output) mode? or do they stay in HO (High-Output) mode, until the ELD makes them go into LO?

That eld system is a pita lol .. but I'm kinda curious on this aswell ... I need to bypass my Eld on my 92 civic when I get my mechman installed ... Out of curiosity do you have pix of his alt setup ? Is like to see how he and where he mounted number 2 lol

He has The second alternator installed where's the AC compressor would go. Using a bracket that he made from scratch. The second alternator is a high amp GSR alternator. And I'm starting to think this whole time his secondary alt has been in Low output mode!

Just posting in here so when I get home, I can do the research and actually type out a worthy response :)

Is the alt that is in the place of the a/c compressor one made for the car, or is it just some GM alt with an internal regulator? If it's the later then it might be fine. I mean, if he upgrades i think he would be smart to get an alt that isn't pcm controlled or anything. That way it would be simpler to wire.

Ok, one is for an Acura, which is fine, it would normally be controlled by the ELD. What about the second one? Knock-off eBay alt? Or one from another Honda/Acura? If it's just a knock-off, no name eBay alt, I'd be a little iffy about it's actual output performance.

Enough with those questions.

The charging system "stands" in the normal, or high output mode. When the computer sees that you're sitting at idle, parked, or maintaining a constant speed, then it will relay that signal to the ELD and kick the alt into LO mode.

Also, does he have any check engine lights on right now? Just asking for the simple fact that if he does, and he's used to the check engine light being on, he can just cut one of the wires that go into the ELD. The whole point of the ELD bypass with the resistor, is to cut that specific wire that regulates LO voltage, and add a resistive value in the wire that would cause a check engine light.

Both are Cheap Ebay 130 Amp Alts. One for a GSR Integra, and the other is for his 95 Civic Sedan....

And he has no CEL's at the moment... But also he doesnt really have a voltage problem right now... i was just wondering. He hardly drops below 13 with a BC2K on a Pair of SA-15's. H also has LOTS of 0 Gauge and dual battery.

I am just curious for my own purpose. Does he have the second alt connected to the harness of the first one somehow? Or just conected to the belt with a pos going to the battery?
