Cost of power - then and now. (watts on the dollar)

Recommended Posts

.....And that is why I thought my system was the sh** when I had both an Orion 225 HCCA AND an Orion 250 HCCA pushing my 2 XTR 12's back in 1995. I am sure Steve can relate. :)

if you had THAT, you WERE the shit. So you were right. hahah..

One-off Phoenix Gold amp, advertised as "not for sale", yet still has an MSRP of $99,000.

In 1995.

$220/watt...why even build an amp and show off the specs for it when you have no intention of ever selling it or making it accessible to the masses?

Same reason Bugatti makes the Veyron.....simply because they can.

I still have a Fosgate Punch200DSM from 1993.

My friend actually bought it and I believe the price was $649-679 retail.

$650/400 = $1.625

I bought it from him used for $450:

$450/400 = $1.125

Recently picked up a DC2K used.

$385/2000 = $0.1925

I agree with Steve...there is NO reason to bitch about amp prices today...period!

Not to mention that most (mono) amps today are Class D which makes them much more efficient then the old school amps.

So even though they are much more powerful, they aren't as hard on your electrical as they could be...

If memory serves me right I paid $1500-1700 for the power 1000 after employee discount :). They were $2000-2400 back in the day.Even the RF 650 4 channel with 2" fan was 1000-1300. Then you would get the pre amps with lights to show off lol. Never thought of the price per watt from then to now big difference. Sadly I'm guilty of griping about the price of amps nowadays :(. Now I wish they had the same cost that they have now back then.
