pretty sure I blew my btl n2 while under powering it...

For a little perspective to those who think that 10-20W isn't that much thermally.

Here is a 40 ohm power resistor (rated to 25W) connected to 20V for a measly 10W:

20*20/40 = 10W

10W_zps83a86c2d.jpg

25V for 15W:

15W_zps2093f4a0.jpg

30V for 22W:

22W_zps7c11cc0d.jpg

Each voltage was tested for only ~15mins each.

Conversion in case you're not familiar with Celsius:

190C = 374F

252C = 486F

325C = 617F

At 22W my power resistor started to melt.....yes it was only a 25W resistor but that's still a lot of heat.

Now given this isn't directly apples to apples as a clipped voicecoil will have a bit more mass then my little power resistor and be moving (more cooling), but then most large mono-amps today with 100+V power rails could easily throw out a LOT of heat across a 1-4 ohm voicecoil depending on the level of clipping.

You connected more equipment up to your amp(s) after frying a BTL without testing some signals first...?

That's rather gutsy....

^ what?

Anywhore, here's the summary of the SSA thread:

kid blows sub, sub attacks kid and heat is from the devil to kill all electrical stuff! and square waves with eat children whole and unicorns are real!

Am I the only one who thinks its the headunit? Lol I mean it bounces a little from the bass and my sub blowing wouldnt distort the fuck outta my speakers. Honestly it sounds like theyve blown too. It sounds that bad when you turn the volume to like 35/62. Could a dying headunit do that stuff?

Yeah but thats 40 ohms and more resistance=more heat

But it probably didnt even have to be clipped too bad (all clipping is bad but not like complete square wave) to make that much heat when you are underpowering it. Reason being is that the soft parts are moving as much as they would be a rated power so there is less cooling action going on and then the coil continues to heat up so that is my guess that even if it wasnt clipped to all hell the heat built up because of not much cooling from limited excursion

Watts are watts.

I could have used a 4ohm resistor with 9.4V and gotten the same result.

I had a 40ohm resistor handy so I used that.

i was only looking to show what level of heat that could be produced from ~20W.

Don't follow your other statement....?

Although there is no such thing as "underpowering" a sub.

Have you even looked at your sub?

Might very vell be somthing else if your whole system went south.
