Guy drives into Walmart then assaults people

SAN JOSE, Calif. —

Several people were injured after a man drove his car into a San Jose WalMart Sunday morning and began assaulting customers inside the store with a blunt object before being subdued by onlookers and arrested by police.

At 11:15 a.m., San Jose Police officers were dispatched to the WalMart on Story Road in response to reports of a vehicle having been driven into the store, according to Ofc. Albert Morales of the San Jose Police Dept.

Police and witnesses said the red Oldsmobile hit an SUV and another car in the parking lot before speeding on to the crowded sidewalk, past vending machines and then turned into the store and went another 30 feet before coming to a stop at a beer display near the entrance, according to witnesses.

Morales said that after the crash, the driver, described as a 33- or 34-year-old black man, immediately exited the car, grabbed a blunt object nearby and began attacking customers inside the store.

Officers said he appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamines.

“Omg dude drove into @Walmart at #storyRd and ran people over and was hitting people with a steel bar,” tweeted @LizziAnaG after the incident. “It was really scary and I feel sad for all the children/people that witnessed it.”

“Everybody just panicked and rushed and screaming,” said Brenda Cao, of San Jose.

Jenifer Boyle who was inside the store at the time of the crash said she knew the driver was there to hurt people.

Witnesses said that a group of bystanders piled on top of the suspect and overpowered him, and one of the participants actually tied the man down with a belt.

Responding officers arrived not too long afterward and arrested the suspect, according to witnesses.

Police booked the man, who was not immediately identified, into Santa Clara County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and felony hit-and-run.

Three people were taken to the hospital, two in serious condition. Another six people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, but police don't believe anyone was hit by the car.

As for the victims, police said they don't believe their injuries are life threatening.

They are now saying before driving into the store he sped onto the ;parking lot and circled around a few times doing up to 40mph and hitting a couple of cars then driving into the store. He then had a car club and started swinging it.
