Purplehaze
So, what exactly is it that makes a head unit capable or not? You can set the pre-outs to only output one band of frequencies. e.x. low -20Hz-80Hz mid - 80Hz-2KHz high - tweets 2KHz+ Isnt that what the crossovers on the amps do? So, what exactly is it that makes a head unit capable or not? you need to be able to control xover points, all sorts of filters, slopes, etc...... I am confused... Sorry. I am confused... Sorry. It is what any crossover does, this way you just have more control and you can do it all from one location. Each crossover point and its slope is defined independently from the head unit. Otherwise using the crossovers on amps you get whatever slope is included (6dB, 12dB, 18dB, 24dB) and whatever frequency range you can select, from the head unit you have a lot more choice regarding slope and frequency. Most component speakers use a passive crossover which does the same job but is obviously a passive analog component with no adjustment available for the crossover point or slope. EDIT: Sorry about your thread Orion, this is SMD. I'm gonna hate
Purplehaze
Gotcha. Thank you.Very nice explanation! So you can do it with most hu's, the real question is, which one make it a whole lot better? Unfortunately you can't do it with a lot of lower end models. It is mostly a feature reserved for sound quality oriented decks or those that just have to have "all the options" for being a flagship model. When choosing an active capable head unit, once satisfied with the crossover, I look for the best D/A converter and I/O. What really makes any deck a whole lot better is a CD player that doesn't skip LOL I'm gonna hate
Purplehaze
So how about an Alpine 9886M, with the PXA-H100 Imprint expansion? Would it be considered "capable"? Pros and cons? Thanks! The Imprint is an outboard sound processor so that will handle the frequency separation in place of the head unit. That is a very nice head unit and processor, outfitting your boat?
