Nice nice clean work man! Very very impressed. Second, I tried to do a separated faceplate like you did, but in my car, and I have to say I'm jealous as FAWK!! I tried to do the soldering on those pieces off the back of the plate and completely messed up a perfectly good alpine unit doing it. Pissed me off. HOW IN THE HELL did you manage to get those little ass tabs soldered to the wires? Please do tell!! Impressive!! Don't forget, if you don't have haters, you're not doing it right! You sir, are doing it right! Well bud first thing you have to do is start on something that isn't worth as much so you can fine tune your soldering technique. Also note, more expensive, more intricate head units will be more difficult because they will have many more smaller pins which means your technique better be on point when modifying a unit worth $500. A technique I've found works best when soldering onto a motherboard is to add solder first (Also use a fine tipped Iron, I'm not a fan of using a gun, just too bulky). Just add solder only, do not introduce the wire yet. The manufacture only puts a tiny bubble of solder onto the board, you need more solder so that when you introduce the wire the solder will bleed up the wire which will make the bond stronger. Solder acts like water in some aspects. It will hold a nice bubble when in liquid form until you introduce an excess of solder then it bleeds onto your other connections. Find that point in which the solder can hold a nice bubble, it will differ depending on the surface area. Once you have a nice bubble, back off. Make sure you don't have too much solder lingering on the tip of your iron or it will cause an excess of solder when you go back in to introduce the wire. Now use a thin wire, I use 18 gauge but it all depends on the fine connections of the unit and how long the wires need to be (impedance will effect the faceplate performance, these circuits usually only run under 2 volts so try your best to make perfect connections at all cost and introduce "no" resistance) . When preparing the wire only strip off an 1/8" of insulation from the wire (give or take). This will help protect it from cross connections if the wires bend around. Also make sure there are no loose strains. I usually have the wire prepared first that way I can create the bubble, let it cool for a second and come right back into it with the wire, it just works faster this way. Once you introduce the wire make sure the solder runs up the wire slightly then you can back off with the iron. Keep the wire in hand and keep steady. It may be a good idea to have the wire and the board in a vice of some sort. You want to keep perfectly still so that you make the best possible bond and you don't slip and solder the wire onto something else. Once you've created all of your connections, test them. Check for continuity, make sure one doesn't cross to another (yet keep in mind that some circuits will feed through the board to another circuit, just depends on how the board is configured. If you find that you're getting continuity from one wire to another wire somewhere in your connections, check the resistance. If it has a short circuit resistance then most likely your solder bled onto multiple connections or there's a loose strain crossing connections. If there is a high resistance then most likely there is a path through the board in which connects these two or more pins together which is fine). Once you're sure of your connections, insulate. I use hot glue because it's cheap and easy and holds structure and insulates, They do make spray insulation, I've never used it so I can't say but if you use it let me know. I'd like to know how well it works. It takes practice and patients. You can do it if you keep trying trust me. a few more helpful tips -Always mind your soldering Iron, aint nothing like sitting it down and coming back to find it fell over onto your board and burned through -Don't get the board to hot (keep it from warping and ruining other connections) -Slow down, take your time and check and recheck. The finish product will be amazing so don't rush it. It's easier to take your time than it is to try to remove an excess of solder that is crossing 3 connections. Also don't short cut. If the connection looks weak, redo it. The tolerances are so fine doing something like this that one weak connection will haunt you until you pull your hair out. So be patient, be smooth and be fine and give it another shot Quote
