Noob_On_Droid
Yeah when I bumped from 400 clamped to 3400 rated I was just looking to break the 50 mark and call if a day. The results have been more than pleasing! The downside to these neos though is that they do not dissipate heat well and cannot be played full tilt over a long period of time. I still play them at "daily" levels over a long period of time but I can only do "demo/burp" levels for about 15/20 min at a time before they become saturated. CNF Kevosinn
I've always been super interested in trying neo woofers. I've heard that as you said they do not dissipate heat well. Is it just these motors or neo in general? I'm trying to educate my self better on the advantages and disadvantages of neo. How are they able to take so much on burps? *** SuperSeller Status Verified *** ( http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/25829-super-sellers-buyers/ ) "kevosinn's" astro van 8 custom Sundown Zv4 18's 4 Sundown scv 6000's CNF Distribution CNC parts Skyhigh wire some batteries SMD Meters and tools used on the installhttp://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/172877-kevosinns-vanwest-coast-skyhigh-car-audio-vehicle/ 16,000 watt walled silverado build.http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/161965-walled-silverado-4-hdc4-15s-4-crescendo-3500s-and-much-more/ 8,000 watt 1999 Subaru legacy outback. Noobtastic14
I've always been super interested in trying neo woofers. I've heard that as you said they do not dissipate heat well. Is it just these motors or neo in general? I'm trying to educate my self better on the advantages and disadvantages of neo. How are they able to take so much on burps? Neos do not dissipate heat well because the typically lack the mass needed. With a traditional ferrite motor, the bigger the motor the stronger it is and the more wattage it can convert into acoustic energy before reaching a magnetic or thermal saturation point (point at which either the motor can no longer absorb heat, or the point in which the magnet can no longer convert wattage into sound) The large ferrite motor has the mass to absorb heat, as well as the surface area to dissipate it after moving it away from the coil. Neos, do not require as much mass because the quality of the magnet is so much greater so they are typically small but equally as powerful or more powerful. Because of this, the woofers tend to heat up quicker. You'll notice that modern neos on woofers such as Fi's line have cooling fins to combat the lack of mass and increase cooling. I kinda lost my train of thought, so in summery. Neos- Small/lightweight Very powerful Very high motor saturation point (can burp stupid power and still see gains) Cons- Heat up quickly/poor cooling expensive/hard to find My particular neo has poor power handling because on top of the heat issues, it has a 2 layer 4" underhung coil which can be delicate. The common neos are overhung and have big fat 3" coils more suited to the brutal car audio environment. -Drew I am a United States Military Arts and Crafts Professional.
