How would you set these gains?

Recommended Posts

So now that I have my tablet all setup and installed in my truck, I have a bunch of different gains and volume knobs to mess with..Heres the order in which stuff is connected Tablet 3.5mm to rca > Hifonics HFEQ equalizer > 4 channel mb quart onyx amp....So I'll list below the gains and volume controls I'm workin with, I know sound quality can only get so good with a 3.5mm connection (and eventually I prolly will get one of soundmans bluetooth to rca module) but whats the best way to set the gains and everything to maximize SQ and help rid extra noise. I control the volume through the tablet completely, the equalizer is in my center console so I don't use that at all to change the volume. I probably will grab a pac LC-1 and put it in between my tab and the equalizer also just so that I have a physical knob.

1. Gain on amp

2. gain on equalizer

3. volume knob on equalizer

4. volume on galaxy tab

you have to start from the beginning ..

if u dont have a right tools, and it seems that dont, u set the volume on ur tablet to about 3/4 and than the same thing on eq. amp gains in the end..

sometimes Loud is NOT pretty

Sounds like its safe to go ahead and bend that ass over.

Well imo grab a dd1. All that is so hard to recommend where you should put ur gains. Especially due to the 3.5mm. Like was said before use at most 75% volume on nexus and eq. Then when it gets to ur amps set them relativly low until you can forsure tell where ur distortions at. I mean ur nexus 7 could be 100% clean or clip Really early no one really knows. The hifonics honestly should be clean all the way up basically. But just due to the fact you could be feeding it distortion i wouldnt push it to hatd.

You should go galaxy tab>eq>amp.

When you figure out the clipping level of the galaxy tab (probably not at all but you never know) you will need to get a headphone>rca jack to connect direct to an amp. Turn the gain on the amp all the way down and then turn the volume all the way up on the galaxy tab. Look at the signal either with dd1 or o-scope to see if you have clipping. If you do then back down the volume on the galaxy until it is clean.

Then you need to set the EQ gain. Turn the remote knob all the way up (unless it is a boosting knob that adds a level of boost, most of the time this is not the case) or simply disconnect it. Connect your galaxy tab to the input of the EQ and then connect the output of the EQ to the amplifier you used previously. Keep the gain on the amp down all the way still and then adjust your gain on the eq until you find clipping and back it off.

Then you just go to your amp and turn the gain up until you get clipping and back it off and you are done.

  • 3 weeks later...

Fyi a bluetooth connection is worse than a direct connection anyday. Just saying. Even tho the signal is being amped in a 3.5mm install it will sound better in regards to the bluetooth. The bluetooth signal has to be transformed from audio into a different signal and encrypted then sent threw the air then recieved and decoded back to audio. You can lose alot of quality with bluetooth. So my advice is use highbit audio files an call it a day. Just my 2cents as i understand how bluetooth works. So ya. Ik i can hear a difference.
