Homemade Super-Neo Woofer: THE CHEVELLE RESTORATION IS DONE, dampener recommendations??

how about a sneak peak with pics? Just FYI: these are all very spare parts that were phased out of the design, the cone is only $30 shipped, the progressive roll spider was sent incorrectly instead of a linear roll, so it was useless, and the coil former was bent like crazy at the top and the coil height was a little smaller than I wanted, so it wasn't gonna be used anyway. So NO, this isn't final at all in any way, just a little pre-test with left over parts for your guys' patience lol.

I ain't about that cancer life. All precautions taken even with the small stuff.

Now the good stuff:

Final cone outcome:

And then of course I figured I'll get a fair amount from the home woofer sub.......pop. My favorite.

IMG_4443_zps421dde41.jpg

It's ok though guys, I got the new fuses when I picked up my car, so even if the home amp doesn't work again, I'll hook it up to the car amps.

The only thing I'm pissed about (aside from not having a power source yesterday) is that I was rushing to get it done for you guys to catch a video, and I didn't want to wait 6 hours for gorilla glue to hold down the spider so I hot glued it even though I knew the bond wouldn't be nearly as strong, and I realize I could have done it now since I was forced to wait anyway.......but whatever, if it comes off I'll hit it with my 1-minute epoxy and let it dry for 2 hours and it should be fine for a temporary thing.

WANT TO KNOW THE BEST PART?!? THERE IS ACTUALLY NO COIL RUB. . . . . (whhaatttttt?!) Yep, you heard that, no coil rub. (at least not when I push on it, when it gets 20Hz it might be different.

Fucking love Alan you goddamned fucking super nerd lol

When Alan uses big words I don't understand

It's warming up enough that the donut-punching cyclist douchenozzles are getting their two wheeled fagmobiles out.

Everytime I see a guy driving a mini cooper I cant help but think he loves cock & (2/29/16)-My wife just bitched at me about throwing out things we don't really use. My response of well we don't really use your vagina so should we throw that out was evidently not the right response. I had to leave the room.

I missed Alan.

RIP 5/29/15 - I love you son.

Got a second video coming too, this on maybe 100W of power, if even? I can't turn the power knob more than 20* deg from 0 or the amp cuts-off.

But it still gets moving. Easily hit a little over 1" peak-to-peak so not bad for a hot-glued single spider and the ghetto gorilla glued cone/coil.

Vids? And a functioning woofer? That means its 2018 already

Didn't you know? The magnetic flux was so powerful and the moving mass was so high that is created a Fs in subsonic tones at such a strong SPL that it caused a wormhole to open right where the dustcap is and it warped us into 2018 already. Why else would Oprah Winfrey be president if it wasn't 2018?

Why are you using 2 different size spiders?

I don't know of that will work

The 8" spiders are very stiff linear roll style, they will also be attached at a different position than the 9" spider. I'm hoping this will help linearity. If you think of a triple joint and the way it attaches to the voice coil, you can see why with my woofer I don't want to risk the single-middle attachment because it's not the most stable design.

Imagine holding a long tube in the middle in between your thumb and index finger, it would be difficult to keep it perfectly straight, but if you could hold it with your other fingers on the other hand, it would be much easier. The problem is probably not a big deal in most woofers, but considering my tight gap I'm hoping this will help keep it aligned.

Sorry if I sound harsh but atop trying to do things that sub builders wouldn't even do like 2 different size spiders

There is a reason every sub company doesn't so that

Your not an engineer a sub designer stop trying to be

If you want the sub to work but if closely following something that's proven and works..... God damn... don't defend ur dumb ass idea of having 2 different sized spiders that would be basically impossible to actually glue down proper only for so.eone who has built hundreds of subs

... let along their first recone

Sure looks like you only used one spider that's not even resting on the top spid err t landing. Good luck with a. Sub that won't be able to move much...

Should have used 4 of the biggest spiders together... on the top of the landing like dc used to do... that would give you the most travel

It's pretty harsh but that's ok. I'll just try to reasonably explain what I'm going for here, so don't take it as douchey or cocky or whatever, I'm just saying what the purpose/idea is:

You're right; there is a reason they don't all do that. I can't say I'm 100% sure, but if I had to guess it's because they don't have any need to whatsoever. But the difference here is fitment sizing, no one else is running a gap as tight as mine (at least that I'm aware of) so they would not have to worry about the coil rubbing as much. Is the situation my own fault? Somewhat, but it's not like I plan on changing everything now.

I never said I was an engineer or designer, but I am still doing things differently than the standard. I don't know of any woofer that has ever used a magnet as the pole piece, even the general construction and configuration is very different. I'm not going against the standard because I'm trying to make a point or challenge it, I just have an idea (which I don't feel is exactly "dumb ass" since it employs logical physics at its helm) that I want to try if that's ok? That's the whole point of the woofer as I mentioned quite a few pages back to audiofanatics when he said something similar about me trying unconventional things.

It wouldn't be impossible to glue down... Challenging? Sure, a little but I still think it should go fine. I can explain the process I have in mind if you want.

As for movement; I'm not sure how else to say it, but I am not concerned even a little about the spiders limited excursion, since I already fear it might smack the base plate. I kept testing it yesterday, and on just 100W, if even that I was able to get it to almost bottom out (within 1cm or less of backplate) using that spider. And I am pretty sure it left the gap a few times on top. When this has full power, I think I am really going to need all the suspension I can get. If you want to know, I initially planned to need it simply because of the Q parameters I think this will have, my motor won't have quite as much Qes as some because of the low back EMF and eddy currents I'm hoping to achieve, so I'll need the suspension to add some Qms to try and "make-up" for it in a sense. As well as the fact my Cms will probably be very high.

Lol, yeah I know you're probably right but I'm afraid of sony I just act like I don't care. :D

And I can't run inverted, I don't want the motor sticking to the trunk lid and denting it and destroying the paint or something lol. I do plan on putting plexi-glass into the box wall so that you can see the motor though.

few things.

im with Drew.

get the biggest spiders. ( 8" or 8.5" i think) THEN space it.

so youll have 4/6 spiders. then you build a pack with 2 or 3, and in the end will have 2 spider packs. either with 2 or 3 spiders per.

maybe sundown will sell you the spacer they use on the 18" basket for the new 9.xx" spiders..

also.. i may have missed it... but.. gorilla glue... reallllyyyyy??
