Don't remind me, I'm literally dreading the moment I have to deal with that. I was thinking, "Oh, I'll just put a wooden shim around it or something". then I realized how tight the gap was and how thin the shim would be, I'm not actually sure it's possible to even get the top plate on without snapping to the center pole lol. Should be fun.

But even worse, look how thick that shim is............and it still snapped. And unfortunately I don't have a pneumatic press in my house

I'm thinkin, 2 half circle PVC shims around the pole, and hammering the plate down with a crap load of lube......yes, lube. So that it can slide down and then I'll put some wooden blocks that are just higher than the magnet poles, so that the plate will snap down onto those first, not shattering everything, and the I can remove them slowly to allow the plate to make contact, but since it sounds so easy and simple I know it's going to be stupidly difficult and frustrating.

AND, that looks like stainless steel in the video which doesn't have the best magnetic permeability, and I'm using A36, which is like 99+% iron

Why not get some thin aluminum slightly smaller then the gap they roll it into a tube shape and use that instead of PVC.

Firstly, cost. Then the fact that with aluminum that thin, it would probably not hold rigid very well. But if I use 2 crescent shaped PVC pipes I think it would hold shape better and I can cover it with lard and it has better re-bound than aluminum so I can hammer the plate onto it to fit tight but not dent it and screw myself. And I think the PVC would be easier to remove.

But it's not completely set in stone obviously. Aluminum might work, if I can get it cheap enough

There's not much I can do now. I'm hoping it won't be too bad. I'm worried about back EMF because I don't have a shorting ring, if I did then it would definitely help with the eddy currents too.

I was curious until I saw assembly about a shorting ring or a T on the pole piece, or an extended pole. You may be able to build this feature into your coil former. Have you chosen a material for your former yet? If you do a conductive former, a non continuous( slight gap where it does not connect) can achieve the same effect as the shorting ring. I dont know. Do you have a clue about what your Xmax is going to be?

It's anodized aluminum and it already has a cut in it to prevent a shorted turn. But the voice coil wire is copper enameled aluminum so yeah.........but it's not as bad as I was expecting, I'll take a video to show SnowDrifter and you'll see the difference between the aluminum VC and my aluminum jog reacting.
