G: Only 1 sketchy aluminum jack

H: Don't have a floor-roller cart-thing that people slide on to get underneath the car

A: it doesn't take that long to do

B: you take off the backing plate undo the axles pull out the gears switch them out put it all back together

C: all you need is a racket and socket set 1 jack and a pair of jack stands and wheel blocks

D: almost impossible to do wrong

G: you mean a creeper and i don't have one either but that doesn't stop me from crawling under my car and working on it

H: the new gears should come with a new pinion if not you can find really good info almost anywhere on Google

Lol naw it's cool man, seems like you know your stuff, so I would probably say the same to someone if it was something I knew about.

But a few things, I don't have anything to hold the axle with, I imagine it's heavy? The creeper is important because my garage floor is covered with oil and dog crap lol, not down to roll around in that while working. Too late anyways though. My mechanic said that he had a specialist come to do it, which made me think it was a little more complicated than usual, or required a more experienced touch, because this guy seems to know everything already, some of the cars in that shop man, if people can trust him with those and the quality of work I've seen so far, I had no reason not to trust him. He is also quite quick, had it finished the next day, just waiting for the water pump replacement now. But I appreciate the concern lol.

If I get it back today I'll let you know. I'm kind of worried though, because I was "testing" moms new quattroporte out, and in sport+manual mode, that thing picks up scary fast. Should have gone with 4.56 lol

Sooooooooooooo, got it back on my way home from school...........turns out he went to 3.73 instead lol

I didn't realize until I checked the invoice. But honestly I can't complain about it, at least not until I drive the freeways haha

Put simply, have you ever driven a car that took longer for you to shift than it did to redline that gear? My god, I can hardly floor the gas before it wants me to shift.

I only did 1 all-out run to 80, but it made me question the strength of the car lol, it vibrates so much you think it's going to fall apart haha. No specific idea on the 0-60 but it's probably between 4-5 if I can really hit the shifts quickly. Seemed more like low 4's. But I'll have to check it out more to be sure.

I hear you on that man but generally speaking it is pretty much that easy hardest part would be switching out the pinnion and and putting the shaft back... then again I have been working on cars all my life.... Sorry dude carry on LOL

Yeah... no. It is not that easy. You can't just take the old ring and pinion out and put a new one in. ALL differentials have VERY specific clearances they MUST be set to in order to prevent them from grenading themselves. The tooth pattern of the ring and pinion has to be perfect. Pinion pre-load has to be just right, backlash has a specific tolerance. Pinion depth come's into play as well if you don't take the shims off the old pinion. Even then it need's to be within spec. The ring gear has to be torqued to the carrier at a certain spec. Gears are NOT for the inexperienced. Can someone do it at home? Sure, but they need special tools like a dial indicator for backlash and an in-lb torque wrench for getting the pinion pre-load just right. Heck, just a good dial in-lb torque wrench will set you back a couple hundred dollars. The you need a bearing separator if you reusing bearings, or a press to install new ones. On top of the tools they need a healthy amount of time and patience to get things right the first time. It could take minutes to hours to get the backlash and gear pattern just right, let alone actually putting the axle back together.

I don't wan to come off as an ass, but it needs to be made clear to those that might see this and think about doing new gears in their car that it is NOT as simple as swapping the ring and pinion out.

I knew there had to be a reason it was $850 and he had to have a guy come in to do it, so thanks lol.

And with as great as the new ride is, I say it's $850 well spent.

Edit: It's a 12-bolt posi if that makes a difference, had it swapped to positraction last year, too bad my other mechanic hadn't suggested the ratio swap then too............could have saved mucho dinero probably, but live and learn I suppose.
