Keveeno Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Building a custom box, I want the best possible air flow, working with 1 inch mdf, should I fiberglass resin the inside of the box before paint or would you say that is pointless cause the paint will be smooth no matter what?

Rection Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Building a custom box, I want the best possible air flow, working with 1 inch mdf, should I fiberglass resin the inside of the box before paint or would you say that is pointless cause the paint will be smooth no matter what? in order to have a nice smooth surface with mdf there are a few things you can do. 1- you can do primer, sand, then another layer or primer and sand again. 2- you can coat it in a layer of resin, then sand smooth. when paint hits mdf, and cures, there are fiber in the mdf that will stand up and create a rough surface. a first coat of primer will cause these fibers to stand up, and then you sand it down and re-prime. with resin, it just coats it thicker than the fibers can stand up through. i do cabinets for a living so i am very familiar with finishing mdf.
