Running 14V Batteries in a 98 Ford Explorer SOHC Sport

Recommended Posts

Maybe try calling the service department at your local ford dealership. I think there is an online tech website for ford as well. I dont remember where it is, but I know I ahve been online somewhere talking to a ford tech.

Would you be running the alt externally regulated?

Yeah I bought an alt with the avbm I'm thinking about charging at 15.8ish I think 16v plus will be too much.

Ill call up my ford dealership tomorrow.

Also CJ, Ed never got in touch with me, do you think you can send him an email I need 7 of the 14v batteries

Just FYI charging 14v batts at 15.8 is equivalent to charging a 12v battery at 13.5v

Thanks for the constant information guys, it's making me nervous about running my stock electrical at 16+ volts. Idk if the ecu can handle that...

might be going back to boring 12V system...

If i hadnt gotten in so deep with 14v batteries I would have swapped back to 12v. I was 21 deep already though and I know it would take forever to sell them and wouldnt get nearly what I paid for them back.

thanks for the info cody, I learned alot going into this 14v world. its awesome but damn it adds up in expenses and it can be risky haha

One option is a step down module. Charge alts at 16.2 and step down to a small 12V batt to run vehicle off of that.

That's one way of doing it. But stepdowns aren't terribly efficient and generate a lot of heat.

What about some sort of pwm power supply?
