ham4864 Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 hi just a quick question. When would the hi level inputs be used i see some amps have them? Any advantage to using them or not.? 2009 bmw 5 series Head Unit Stock Amplifier-JL Audio JX 360/4 Processor- Audiocontrol LC6
hazestorm23 Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 It just gets the signal directly from the speaker wires from your car I never use them and I don't think anyone here does either . They're called high-level inputs because the voltage level is significantly higher than with a standard preamp output connection. These inputs convert the high voltage to one the amplifier can handle. Its useful when you don't want to run RCA's then you can just connect your regular speaker wires. So you only use this when you just want to updrage your original speakers nothing too fancy just an 100x4 amp should do the trick of getting you a better sound than just having your original deck that only puts out about 8-10 watts per channel
TheMonolith2001 Posted August 22, 2013 Report Posted August 22, 2013 It's mainly used for installing an amplifier into a factory system where you do not have any RCA outputs coming from the headunit. You splice the speaker wire into it. There are high level converters for amplifiers that do not have this type of input. You really only want to use this if you absolutely have to and as a last resort. The signal will not be as clean.

TheMonolith2001 Posted August 25, 2013 Report Posted August 25, 2013 I use it and I don't have any issues with clarity. JL 500/1 Yeah but I bet if you switched to RCAs you would notice a difference. On a fancy pants amp like the JL 500/1 it probably does some things to try and clean it up a bit but no amount of trickery is going to match the cleanliness of an RCA out with a good headunit. My brother has one of those amps, it's pretty nice. I think it has a THD of like 0.05 so why would you feed it a signal that is probably like 1%+ THD? It's just kind of a waste you know?
