117a to 160a alternator benefits?

Recommended Posts

My jeep has a factory 117a alternator. Denso externally regulated small case. I can buy a bolt in large case denso 160 amp for 50 bucks. Anyone think its worth it? Its not a rebuilt alt, just a factory denso alternator with half the miles my 117a has on it. The 160 has a larger pulley so I will swap the smaller one from my 117a onto it. Ive got plenty of belt wrap to prevent slippage. Im running a hifonics zrx2000 and a soundstream picasso nano 520.4. Does this sound like a good idea or a waste of effort?

Shoot for 50 bucks might as well give it a try. Just save your original stock alt.

I wish I could have gotten some before and after readings but my multimeter decided it wanted to commit suicide. Ive never felt wires get so hot lol. Pretty sure it has to do with my friend using it to test current draw the other day.. but anyways. I can't believe the difference installing that alt made. Zero voltage drop while driving and my volt gauge (factory innacurate pos) doesnt drop below 13v at 700rpm idle with headlights on. It used to hit 11.8-12 with my lights off. My system really woke up also. I thought I was getting used to everything because it was a bit quieter but now its back to what it used to be. Can't wait to get some numbers at the midwest spl event this saturday! It'll be my first time at an event.

Pretty sure my factory alt was on its last leg. My Jeep fires up so much faster now which I found odd. I've got to install an anl fuse tomorrow because I lost my fuseable link between the alt and pdc when I did my big three with 2/0. I normally fuse to what the wire can handle but since its just from the alt to the pdc and my alt is only 160, should I just stick a 200amp fuse in there to be on the safe side?
